The Cowboys are in serious negotiations on a long-term extension with restricted free agent K Dan Bailey.
The Cowboys wisely scooped up Bailey, the 2010 Lou Groza award winner, as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State three years ago. He's proceeded to go 89-of-98 (90.8 percent) on field goals, including 16 makes from 50-plus.

I remember the years without a kicker .... and those days as a Cowboys fan sucked worse than these do

They'll find a way to keep him. Hell Real damn easy to franchise a kicker

It would be nice to know how much he's getting with his 7 year deal.

Cowboys K Dan Bailey's six-year extension is worth $22.5 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed.

Only in Jerry's World. More cap strapped than any team in football, the Cowboys will likely have to convert salaries into prorated "signing" bonuses elsewhere on the roster to fit Bailey's head-scratching new deal into their already in-the-red finances. Bailey gets a $4.5 million signing bonus and $3.4 million per year in new money. We don't have any problem with Bailey -- he's 26 and one of the top placekickers in the game -- but the Cowboys' contractual dealings are annually the most preposterous in football. Maybe they'll bulk up Bailey and get him to double at defensive tackle. Dallas is currently nearly $22 million over the cap.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this was a ridiculous signing. Bailey is awesome but as cap strapped as the Cowboys are this is the wrong contract to be giving a kicker of any pedigree imo. Jerry is officaly the new Al Davis. :bawling:

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't think this is a crazy signing.

He has won 7 games in the past two season with a game ending field goal

Without that the Cowboys aren't 16-16 the past two years the are 9-23. And instead of even being able to play for it in the final game ..... Cowboys are the laughing stock of the NFC East.

What's going to be real funny are the ones that say this is a dumb signing are going to be the ones all on board with paying Dez Bryant top 5 receiver money. When in reality he is somewhere around top 15
( worth about 5-7 million a year) and is gonna get around 15

but hey if it wins fantasy football leagues ...... who cares if it wins ball games

You aren't alone. If signing him means we need to cut someone else, so be it. He is one of the bright spots on the team, and we don't have to worry about place kicker for the next 6 years. He also doesn't require us to carry a second "kick off specialist" like the last guy that rolled through here.

I'm ok with this signing. We are in trouble because we paid money to over the hill "name" guys and not guys who go out and perform at an all pro level. Bailey does, so sign him.

See we agree on this. Not like he is a one year guy.... He has been solid since we got him. ( and Jeez having to carry two kickers)
People think this defense was bad this year and last ..... Imagine if we had a fucked up kicker that gave our defense shitty field position or one (once again) we couldn't trust to make a 35 yard field goal...... and that was just a few years ago .... and lasted for a few years.

anywhere around a 50 yarder .... I have faith in Bailey.

Now lets compare that to the Dez contract coming up. Hurt every year. causes distractions every year. Has 2 1000 yard seasons (same as Austin) Yet we are saying get Austin out of here.... but find a way to resign Dez who wants top 5 receiver money
I don't see the logic

Considering it's a back loaded 7 year deal which doesn't kick in until the 2015 season I don't see the problem odds are he will play 5 years this contract. He won't see the back loaded years unless the money he's due is the going rate

what I put on here was straight off the internet. Not my opinion.
I love the signing.
We have either had an accurate kicker but he has to be inside 40 yds, or a kicker with a leg but was like playing Russian roulette. Highly inaccurate.
We finally have a kicker that is accurate & has a leg. Looks like there are a lot of people out there not understanding the importance of a reliable kicker.
this signing is a :thumb: to me

Now we just have to play well enough to win a game by a field goal.

We can renew him when we make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs. Otherwise he's worthless IMO. That's not to say he isn't talented- but DAL can't put him in a position to really justify that paycheck. Literally, the past 3 years: barely scrape by in the regular season, maybe win a wild card, then lose. And the funniest part is we never need a field goal to win.

with this way of thinking, why resign anyone? you can say that about any player. but then again with this way of thinking, we would never make the playoffs ever!
I guess we just wait for the team to improve then just wish we had a kicker. Except for maybe the saints, all championship caliber teams has good kickers. Ask the teams that has had vinatieri (sp) how important a kicker is.

the whole why try until we are better excuse is absolutely absurd!
teams get better by keeping their good players.

Bailey is a great kicker and I don't think anyone can question that. I can guarantee that I hold him in as high regard as anyone on here. However, that in no way means that whatever we paid him was automatically a good signing - I still haven't seen the details to decide how I feel myself. I love LP Ladouceur too, but that doesn't mean I give him whatever he wants. We always seem to overpay our guys because we are afraid to let them go and that more than the FAs we signed is what kills us. Most teams that know how to operate in a cap world refuse to over pay consistently for players. We fall in love with our own players like a fantasy owner that won't trade Russell Wilson for Tom Brady because he feels like he discovered him or something.

The idea that since a guy is good and that we signed him means it was a good signing is way, way off base. It's all about what the player got in $'s versus his value to this team and what are the other options. That is all that matters in a cap world.

Here is the way to analyze the Bailey deal. What was the next best offer on the table going to be that we needed to beat? We could have thrown him $10M per year, but saying how important he was to the team wouldn't justify that would it? The second way to analyze it is what would our option be if we lost him. If it costs you $4M per year for 6 years for an A+ kicker, but you can you can get a "B" kicker for $1M per year then you don't have to sign the A+ kicker when you are already in Cap Hell and could use that money to bring in another player. You can't look at Bailey versus other top kickers and just look at average salary when some of those kickers may have shorter deals and may be on teams that aren't in cap hell.

I understand you exaggerated the prices to make your point clear. but when a team has a good kicker, you sign him to a long term contract so you don't have to worry about that position anymore. Considering the last time the Cowboys had a kicker with a leg worth keeping on the team was Septien, & he wasn't all that great. You lock up your kicker. Another thing with the cap. Working around a kickers contract is much easier to do than say working around a WRs contract, if you over paid for him. This contract wont kill the cowboys. Dez & other player contracts coming up if done wrong can. Reliability in your kicker helps you win 1/3 of the game. (special teams) As we improve our trenches, we wont be blown out in any games, which will make the kicker all that more important. A position (barring injury) we no longer have to worry about. the kickers contract wont be a reason why we struggle to get under the cap.Sure he is a higher paid Kicker, but it wasn't record breaking. Hell Spencers one year contract was half of the kickers entire contract. Who we honestly could have played without. No matter how it is spun. I am happy with this signing.
