Could the Lions transition to the 3-4 defense?

Gunny loves to blitz, though. His defenses in KC were built around it...

Those were Herm Edwards defenses. Gunny hasn't ran "his" defense in nearly a decade.

The best episode of Wings was when Brian thought he was the puppet master. Good shit.

Kinda reminds me of Schwartz' tenure.

It's not about wanting to switch but hiring a HC and D-Coordinator that runs the 3-4.

I think the Lions have developed the 4-3 and with the young talent they have are not that far from being a better defense in the league. But the guys they do had can they transition…..and IMO yes and would actually be better situated to do so.

Suh on the edge would be very productive, and the Lions have enough guys to fill the LB positions.

I hope we don't transition to a 3-4!

Don't get me wrong- I like the 3-4 better than the 4-3 (or, more accurately nowadays, the 4-2-5 (not to be confused with my revolutionary 4-2-6)), but we have a outstanding front 6 in the 4-2 alignment.

Yes, some of those guys "could," in theory, move positions to make a 3-4 work, but their talents are geared to a 4 man front, and the big step forward our defense took this year would be wiped out if we switch schemes on that drastic of a level.

Just my $0.02, but I think our defense is already equipped to be a top-10 unit in a 4-2-5 with a couple more additions...

Also, like JayFan pointed out, it would depend on the type of 3-4 scheme. Are we talking traditional 3-4, or a Wade Phillips-style 3-4 "under".

I'm a much bigger proponent of the under alignment. I didn't care for Schwartz' wide-9 alignment, but I was a fan of the 1-gap under scheme that let our d-linemen attack vs. read and react...

I would like to see a 14-2-15. Wouldn't be a lot of room on the field. Probably get a few 31 men on the
The field penalties too. Okay maybe not the best idea.

It would appear Gunny doesn't mind being a puppet. Or he just likes HC's hands up his butt?

I love the 3-4 but you need good LB's for it.....we have 2.....plus our strength is our DL.....could ansah play OLB? Maybe....fairley at nose, suh and taylor on the edge.....just need 4-5 good LB's now.

The best thing about going to the 3-4 would be Mack or Barr in the first. It's been a long time since Detroit drafted a stud LB. Last really good one I remember is Reggie Brown.

They could transition to it but it would be a disaster.
