Maybe, but even friends of mine who pay dick all worth of attention to stats always agreed his defensive play was garbage.

It just never made any sense to me how people thought he brought anything above replacement level for his price tag. His re-signing wasn't Lupul-Clarkson bad but it was pretty ugly.

If you do a quick search (I understand if your response is "ain't nobody got time for that  , I got bored about a minute and a half after I started ) there should be lots of derp still online praising Bozak's defensive play. Hell, I remember reading a Hockey News piece just this past offseason mentioning that Bozak was better for a heavy shutdown role than Kadri because of his stronger defensive chops, although I don't remember who the writer was.

There's some truth to that generally I suppose but I still don't see a ton of defensive zone ability on this roster. And if we're not talking specifically about defense then one can say that Bozak always had talent on his line for contrast.

I always thought Bozak's perceived defensive ability was like the hockey version of "Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense".

"Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense states that a catcher's defensive reputation is inversely proportional to their offensive abilities. Therefore light-hitting catchers get good defensive reputations and top hitters like Ted Simmons wind up with lousy reputations. One can note that many catchers have lost a reputation for glovework once they began hitting better and that the opposite is also true, further reinforcing Nichols' Law."

He was on the first line and wasn't scoring as much or as big a part of the offense in general as his linemates, so a lot of people just figured there had to be another reason he was on that line.

I find this particularly poignant in regards to defensemen. Size and nationality plays a big role in hockey too. If a guy is big and North American he's automatically good at D (eg. Hal Gill, Jared Cowen, Eric Gryba). If they don't score then they are most def a defensive/PK specialist even when they suck at it like Mark Borowiecki.

For sure. The fact he was seen as one of the more "improved" players under Babs last season just added fuel to the fire.

I'm actually quite surprised there are so many people on his back this quickly about his play.

Since the Leafs haven't given anybody much to laugh at lately, here's some actual comedy outta T.O.:

Thanks for posting. Gave me an opportunity to stretch my brain a little.

When I watched the video, I did not recognize the location. Sure looked like Etobicoke to me, but a minute with Google and I found the intersection. I was a little off, but not too bad.

Probably because as you approach there's a huge gravel yard still taking up almost all of the NW corner of St. Clair & Caledonia. Would look just as at home on Evans Ave., except for the LRT line.

Rielly isn't having a very good start to the season but pairing him with Roman Polak is some kinda punishment.

I know this is a dumb question because Hunwick is lurking there but how much longer before they tell Marincin to pack his shit and call up one of Valiev or Nielsen? Babs can bag skate them all he wants but when you have guys like this (not to mention Ben Smith, who is crap) expected to keep the puck out of the zone you can't really shit on the rest of the team for feeling the trickle-down effect.

Oh, and fucking put Corrado in or trade/waive him. This shit is just mean now and it's likely stunting his development.

Second oh: Hyman is a 4th liner. Put him there and put someone with skill on the first line.

I haven't looked at it recently, is Marincin needed for expansion draft quotas?

Don't see how he would be. If they go the 8 skater route you have Kadri, JVR, Komarov, Brown (assuming he stays up all year), Martin, Rielly, Gardiner and Carrick. That should cover it.

Seth Griffith should be an attractive option for the Canucks

No no, I'm talking about how they have to expose a certain number of players with a certain amount of experience. Would keeping Marincin and exposing him keep them from having to expose someone they like more?

Basically the same reason I don't think anything will be done with Bozak, and I'm fine with it.

Oh, didn't know that was a requirement. Guess that makes sense.

Rielly - 1 goal, 3 assists
Marincin - 1 goal
Hyman - 1 goal

Anyone else got any players that need a jump start? I will shit-talk your under-performing players for money.

  • Buston Matthews
  • William No Broken Eggs Nylander
come to mind first.
They'll come around. Matthews alone has hit like 18 posts and crossbars in his last three games (Hymans goal fell to him after Auston hit the bar). Just need some puck luck.

Both guys, along with Marner, are still on pace for 70 pts.
