This is my feelings.

For the top 7 teams or so, a 4M AAV is a free player. He can be DFA'd for the last year and the Sox will not even feel it.

Exactly. You get it. They didn't sign this guy to bat cleanup....or to even be a starter!

He's a role guy like a Jonny Gomes was. I don't really "get it" either, but it will make more sense by April. Please note that this move does NOT preclude them from getting pitching. In fact, I think Bradley might be moved as part of a package for pitching now.

Not saying it does but it's a head scratch-er and if the Yankees didn't want him why would the sox? or any other team for that matter?

so they trade JBJ and maybe Betts and keep him? Who the heck is going to want this guy?

Betts is staying. He and Bogaerts are the 2 they build around for a while. Guys like JBJ, Swihart, Barnes, Owens, Shaw (and others) might be moved this Winter, I would think.

I think they only get moved for pitching OR on the very slim chance (lmao) a team takes Hanley or Pablo

The entire contract they gave this guy is what they will pay Hanley before the All-Star break this year. They have bigger woes than their 4th outfielder....

Hanley should have some value to a team that can use him as a DH..... Not sure on Panda. They need to hope he's better in year 2.

There is nothing in Sandoval's history that shows he will improve at all. He has ZERO work ethic, and when he gets pushed, he feels "disrespected".

He has all the raw talent in the world. He just doesnt care to improve himself. Sad, really.

If they signed him and expect him to start 150 games, then yes it's a bad signing. But as a 4th OF who will only see time as a PH or to give one of their starting OFers some days off to rest(or fill in if one gets hurt), it's not bad.

Not to mention all the weight he has, that doesn't help him one bit

Good point. I guess I'm hoping he takes things more seriously in year 2?? Maybe the adjustment to the new league is better this time around? I'm grasping at straws here. But moves like this one is why the previous GM got canned.

The Sox HAVE to treat him like a child (because he is) if they want to get ANY productivity out of him. But I seriously doubt that even that will work. He simply has no incentive to stay in shape.

This is exactly why I did not want the Giants to sign him to anything longer than a 3-year contract, at ANY price. I would have preferred a 3/100 over a 5/100. Gives him some incentive to do SOMETHING with his playing time.

This is the kinda low-risk signing that elicits the worst responses from the home team fans. Love how it's in the very first post.

OMG WE GOT THIS SUPER CHEAP GUY FOR DEPTH AND PLATOONS SO NOW OUR PITCHING ROTATION IS FUCKED FOREVER

This is exactly what you're supposed to do as a big market franchise. You can afford to put big money on your bench instead of filling it with quadruple-A bums and 34 year old NRI guys who hit well in spring training because the pitchers were throwing only fastballs for three innings because while they were "working on something."

Chris Young is fine for that role. He's a decent-enough part-time player and for that role it's a luxury to be able to spend up for that. He's not coming to the club in order to take playing time away from the stars.

I read it was 2/13.5 which is a lot for a short side platoon guy.

But the theory is solid.

JBJ won't face tough lefties.

And Young can also give Rusney some days off as well.

Yeah just confirmed on bleacher report the money and length. Reminds me of the Mike Cameron signing (granted Young is younger) but still, all that money for nothing. In the grand scheme of things this is chump change for the Red Sox

Very true. Cameron was a huge who aged well...but the sox got in when he hit rock bottom.

But yes a similar theory to the Cameron move. which, if he had played like he had the 2 year before, would've been a steal.
