Red Sox find their fourth outfielder in Chris Young

It was viewed as part of the plan — to get a fourth outfielder, to go with Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts, who preferably hit from the right side.

Chris Young has become that guy (pending a physical).

According to major league sources, the 32-year-old outfielder has agreed to a multi-year contract with the Red Sox. Terms of the deal are not yet known. TheRed Sox interest in young gained steam at the GM meetings earlier this month — with the team meeting with the outfielder’s representatives — with a deal coming into place Monday.

Young revitalized his career with the Yankees in 2015, playing in 140 games, totaling 14 home runs, a .252 batting average and .773 OPS. His best season came in 2010, when he made the All-Star team with Arizona, finishing with 27 homers, 28 stolen bases and a .793 OPS.

Young played all three outfield positions with New York in ’15. Against lefty pitching, he hit .327 with a .927 OPS.

First. Why the hell did they sign him?
Second. Why the hell did they make it a multi-year deal?!?!

This really has to be one of the most irritating posts I've ever read. I hate the whole thing. The grammar, the content, the everything. I hate it.

Terrible signing? They will give him small money. He will platoon with Rusney as of now. Most likely, they end up trading Bradley now, I think. Signing Hanley was a "terrible" signing. Signing Porcello was a "terrible" signing. This one barely even registers.

Yes those certainly are... But this was is as well. Why sign a guy who barely can do what Betts and JBJ are doing now?

This is my feelings.

For the top 7 teams or so, a 4M AAV is a free player. He can be DFA'd for the last year and the Sox will not even feel it.

He's a role guy like a Jonny Gomes was. I don't really "get it" either, but it will make more sense by April. Please note that this move does NOT preclude them from getting pitching. In fact, I think Bradley might be moved as part of a package for pitching now.
