White Sox series this year definitely makes me think that. Right after a Moustakas HR, Cain gets a bean. It's maybe 2-3 of the HBP's at most, but there have been 100% intentional pitches thrown prior to this series.

Samardzija was intentional, no doubt

This wasn't a big deal, wasn't even a little deal, in the old days. Why is it so terrible now? So terrible that teams are not throwing at him once, but throwing at him repeatedly and trying to injure him? His slide was completely within the rules and a part of baseball

Agree with this 100%. The Royals fans are showing the wussy-ism

K. Backing your own team has been going on for 130 years now. Doesn't matter if it was within the rules.

Keep the ball away from the guys head and im all for revenge. But when you elevate it your not just getting revenge you could be ending a career.

The slide looks fine to me. He easily could touch the base & his spikes didn't start high, they rose after he bumped the base. I played 2nd/SS from LL through JC, this slide is pretty typical to me.

As to the Royals reaction, a bit classless on their part & some suspensions will likely be handed out. Herrera should see the most severe suspension out of anyone. There is no place in BB for what he did.

The premise behind the hard slide is to break up a chance at a double play. The way the SS was stretched out made it apparent that there was not going to be a DP attempt so, why slide hard into his leg? Everyone knows that when contact is made that it increases the chances for injury so, with nothing to gain from the contact in this situation, why would you attempt it? There is one of two possible answers. Lawrie was attempting to hurt someone or, he's an idiot.

Oh, he intentionally made sure his spikes hit Alcedes, he looked right at his leg and never bothered to get near the bag with his lead foot, he actually might have been safe if he wasn't trying to hurt Escobar. and Ventura gets to hit him, the problem was Herrera not smart enough to hit anybody else in the lineup.

Yeah, this picture doesn't help Herrera or the Royals at all. Herrera is bush.

From some of the comments here, one would think you guys never played competitive baseball.

Nice pick to show it wasn't near his head and would have hit him in the ribs.

he sure didn't "bump" the base, he was within a foot of it, closer than any ball to Lawrie's head.

I don't have a problem with what Lawrie or Ventura did, either way. Herrera set himself up.

The slide was clean, a little late, but clean. No one to blame here other than Royals def shift, thus making the SS receive the ball on the wrong side of the bag & the fact the ball got there late because of the deflection. Lawrie did what any non-fatty would do in that situation. Lawrie should have been called safe on the play anyways.

The way some royals fans have responded to the slide, you would think it looked like this:

Even though this was a cheap shot it was breaking up an attempted DP. Lawrie was gaining nothing from his slide and, like previous people have claimed, he may have been safe if he had just went for the bag.

He would've been safe if the A's challenged the call. Watch it.

the A's did challenge it, he would have been safe if the lead foot would have gone to the bag instead of at the leg. Ruling, again, was out.

Interesting. I still have no issue with what he did.

But he still looks safe to me. Just because he would've been safe had he not went in hard doesn't mean what he did was wrong. Or poor sportsmanship or any of that. It looked like a very standard play and it sucks that these athletes think they need to retaliate.
