Not sure how well this comparison holds as I am too young (besides Clemente being more accomplished of course) but this reminds me a bit of when Clemente died. Jose meant a lot more to people than just another good pitcher.

I think comparisons are automatic when something like this happens. However, I don't think this one holds up.

Clemente was in the end-stage of his career and died in the process of doing humanitarian work. Fernandez was in the beginning stage of his career and died having fun (nothing apparently wrong with that, btw).

I think a better comparison (though also not perfect) would be Steve Olin. Olin was one of the premier closers in the game at the time of his death, and he also died in a boating accident.
