If the Phillies are building a time machine, the moves they've made might make sense.

Abreu was a very underrated player. 7 consecutive 5+ WAR seasons with the Phillies. 13 consecutive seasons with 150+ games played is pretty remarkable.

saw the article on espn and read some of the comments. people get way too emotional over cheesy invites and long shot players. even if they somehow luck into making the team, they are nothing.

it's like bitching at your football team because they signed someone to the practice squad.

Complete joke... Amaro needs to go! Id rather see young players, then all of these re-treads.

People complain about Abreu, Gaudin, Cedeno, etc. then aren't upset about 7.1 mil to Kendrick, 26 mil to Ruiz, and 16 million to Byrd.

OK

So he took all of last year off just to flush the "juice" out of his system ?

Bobby Abreu to Philadelphia Phillies on minor league deal - ESPN

lol at ....after failing to land a big league contract in 2013, he took the year off to tend to his business interests in his native Venezuela and prepare for a comeback.

So glad my team's GM didn't offer him a contract...Yikes!!

If the Phillies are looking for any LH bats, J.D. Drew is available.

Wouldn't be a true sports forum without outrageous claims without any proof to back them up.

Hoe old is Abreu - 50? This is pathetic.
Does Amaro ACTUALLY think that he is going to field a competitive team with this crap?

damn..lighten up, meat......I was just joshing y'all.........wow.

It's cool I'd be bitter too if my team's last championship was in 1986 and my next one probably wouldn't occur until 2075 or later.

Yeah, in all seriousness, it's not a terrible move. But I'd think the Phillies have at least 4 or 5 outfielders in their farm system that could outproduce Abreu at this point. He batted .242/.350/.342 in 2012.

Still, even if he were to somehow break with the team out of camp, he would only be making 800k, which in this day and age is truly just gas money.

Well, gas money if you recklessly drive a Hummer and don't pay any mind to global warming or Al Gore. Shame on you if you do that.
