The usual diatribe against the SEC is that they play only 8 conference games combined with weak OOC schedules which leads to inflated W/L records and more Bowl teams. As in...
Yes, and your "mid/lower tier teams" only have to win three conference games to reach a bowl. My assertion is that it is easier for your "mid/lower tier teams" to win three conference games than it is for "mid/lower tier teams" SEC teams to win two!! Evidence???
IF the SEC IS getting preferential treatment then surely it should be reflected in the W/L records. IF the SEC has teams playing in Bowl games they “don’t deserve” that should lead to a LOWER W/L record. Let’s see.
As for "feasting" on lower quality opponents...
Bowl Games vs G5 opponents
1) PAC 31 VS G5 (24.0% of the PAC Bowls are against G5 teams!!!!)
2) ACC 27 VS G5 (16.8% of the ACC Bowls are against G5 teams)
3) B12 16 VS G5 (10.8% of the B12 Bowls are against G5 teams)
4) SEC 15 VS G5 (8.33% of the SEC Bowls are against G5 teams)
5) B1G 9 VS G5 (5.88% of the B1G Bowls are against G5 teams)
The PAC with their "We play more P5 teams and tougher OOC" schedule gets to play MORE G5 teams in Bowls than any other P5 conference! The SEC with their "inflated" W/L records has to play MORE P5 teams!!!
Welllllll... maybe feasting isn't the right word.
1) SEC 10W - 5L---0.667 VS G5
2) ACC 18W - 9L---0.6667 VS G5
3) B1G 5W - 4L---0.5556 VS G5
4) PAC 16W - 15L---0.5161 VS G5
5) B12 8W - 8L---0.5000 VS G5
How did the "over matched" SEC teams do???
In games vs ALL Opponents
1) SEC 107W - 73L---0.5944
2) B12 74W - 74L---0.5000
3) PAC 63W - 66L---0.4884
4) ACC 78W - 83L---0.4845
5) B1G 71W - 82L---0.4641
The SEC is the ONLY conference above 0.5000 and are 34 games over 0.5000!!!
The PAC has a losing records overall.
In games vs P5 Opponents
1) SEC 97W - 68L---0.5879
2) B12 66W - 66L---0.5000
3) PAC 47W - 51L---0.4796
4) B1G 66W - 78L---0.4583
5) ACC 60W - 74L---0.4478
The SEC is the ONLY conference above 0.5000 and are 29 games over 0.5000!!!
The PAC has a losing records vs P5 Opponents.
Note: In case you want to claim that the "numbers don't add up" for P5 teams (I left ND and the Big East conference out of the tables but not out of the calculations. BE was 34-27---0.5574 vs P5 and ND was 3-9---0.2500 vs P5)
I have no idea what AG fishing trip caused this, but the table in the OP doesn't take into account that the SEC gets in more bowl games because they have more OOC games for their mid/lower tier teams to feast on to reach 6 games. You only have to win two league games to reach a bowl. That sets their bowl appearances and appearances per number of members in an entirely different category than the others....
