It seems like the Phillies are drawing the line. Even though they are under the new $189 million tax threshold. (they are currently at 165 million in payroll commitments.) So,I must admit that I am shocked. So I am thinking that The owner put the handcuffs on Amaro, no big contracts, and or, they will wait till the all star break to see if they are in contention, and if they are, they can sign a front line player if needed. Then a few more thoughts entered my mind, The fans won't be coming out to the ballpark as when we were winning, and that cuts into the revuenue,.so maybe the money is not available to spend. Last but not least: how can you spend $165 million bucks, and wind up with a mediocre team? Well, there will certainly be a lack of things to talk about until spring training kicks in!

I like the fact that he overspends for a lot of players then says things like "Our payroll is at 165 million. For that much, we should be contenders every year".
Kind of like spending 5 grand on a 1500 dollar used car that leaks oil and saying "I paid 5 grand for my '94 Mercury Grand Marquis. For that price it shouldn't leak any oil"

Phillies should have moved Cody Asche to get Addison Reed from the White Sox - could have been a suitable guy to replace Pap as the closer if the Phillies were to move him

We don't even know what Asche can do yet. He didn't have the greatest 50 games as a hitter but his third base was excellent.

You could say the same thing about Matt Davidson, who the D-Backs traded in order to get Addison Reed

I like the White Sox approach better than the Phils and Diamondbacks. If they do trade Papelbon just let Diekman close and hopefully he racks up 30 something saves by the end of the year. Then if you could trade him for an infielder who has the potential to be a good major league hitter, move him and make someone else the closer. I think the Dbacks may end up regretting this one.

Worrying about the closer spot is hilarious.

How? If you can trade Paps and then get a young, controllable closer with a good arm, why not look into it?

Because you do not trade a position player for a relief pitcher. That is an awful plan. Trading for "closers" only leads to wasted trades. The Phillies need production at third a lot more than they need a closer, high priced or otherwise.
