Shrewd because a 2-0 is a bit more stressful than a 1-0 breakaway...but man, that's shitty. I don't know how you penalize that any more though, unless you simply reward a goal.

Can it not be a shrewd move and poor sportsmanship?

Let's ask Luis Suarez, shall we?

Brilliant i do say. BUT just proves he's a coward for not taking the 2 on 1 challenge.

It depends on a few things. Like if you were cheering for his team or not, if he is a 'savvy veteran' or a 'disrespecting the game youngster'.

Should be in the rules that is a 10 minute misconduct - and somebody has to serve it for the goalie. That way it punishes his team more than a penalty shot he has probably a 70% chance of stopping.

I like that he was thinking outside the box and had the presence of mind to promptly execute the countermeasure. I don't consider it poor sportsmanship, I consider it strategy.

That said, I do believe this will spark a hockey rule to more harshly punish goalies for copying the maneuver.

I would settle for a 2 minute minor where the goalie has to serve it. Bringing in a cold backup is almost a guaranteed PPG. At least a far higher percentage than scoring on the penalty shot.

a goal should immediately be given and a 5-10 minute penalty on the goalie. That is piss poor sportsmanship and he shouldn't have had the opportunity to stop a penalty shot!

Still award a penalty shot and regardless if the penalty shot is successful, the goalie's team still gets a two minute minor for delay of game. That would put a stop to these kind of shenanigans.

Better yet, 2 minutes with an empty net

Part of me has always felt that teams should be given the option of penalty shot or 2 minute power play. Or at least given a powerplay if they don't score on the shot.

Yeah I agree pix. The team awarded the penalty shot should have the choice of accepting the penalty shot or taking the 2 min powerplay (as there are definitely times when taking the powerplay is the wiser choice (say late in the 3rd period and holding onto a 1 goal lead).

Agreed. Early in the game you take the PS because you've got a higher chance of scoring. But when you need to eat clock, the PP is a much better option.

How great would it have been if the ref could award a 2 man penalty shot?

I always thought this was the case, however I'm not finding it in the NHL rulebook. Here is the excerpt from the USA Hockey rulebook:
(a) If the offense for which the penalty shot was awarded was such as would normally incur a minor or bench minor penalty, the non-offending team may, prior to the penalty shot, elect that the minor or bench minor penalty be assessed to the offending player or team in lieu of the penalty shot. If the penalty shot is selected, the offending team shall not be reduced in on-ice strength as a result of the infraction.

So the NHL rules don't allow for this apparently? I didn't know that.
