Well statistically (not end all be all) the Bengals were not a highly rated unit, but I recall him developing good CBs but that doesn't show me he can develop and run a unit to success. Same with D, Fox took over a putrid talent base in Chicago with zero offensive support and were respectable.

It isn't to say he isn't a good coach, he is clearly well thought of, but you are taking over a Super Bowl team with elite D and the expectation is that he will continue to maintain and build it, along with the rest of the team and I think it is fair for fans to be a bit skeptical when he hasn't had quite the level of success that Shanahan has for instance. I think fans would be skeptical of him if he hadn't had readily apparent success at each stop. We are lay people with no way to really know how good these guys will be as a head coach. I think some fans, me included, aren't as comfortable with Joseph's track record, but if that is Elways choice and I think he has probably earned the benefit of the doubt. :dhd:

You are right that a 1st time hire we have no clue exactly what we are getting. At the same time I wouldn't say looking at past accomplishments as a coordinator are the best way to go about looking at future production. Josh McDaniels at the time we hired him was coming off the highest scoring offense in NFL history. Our team tanked especially the offensive side of the ball under him.

Wade Phillips has readily admitted that he isn't a great HC but knows how to coach up a defense as a DC.

Really the top coaches are not the X's and O's types any more. They really are more the CEO types. I don't think Bill Belichick actually calls plays. He makes recommendations throughout the week but his coordinators do all the in game play calling.
Pete Carroll falls into that same spot. He has helped build up that defense in Seattle but at the end of the day his DC still calls all the plays.
Mike Tomlin same thing

Those have been 3 of the most consistent coaches of the last 10 years in the league. They do a much better job offering support throughout the roster and maybe most importantly keeping the locker room together.

This is why the coaching staffs he hires will show a bigger part of what he wants out of each unit.

Rumor was Wade was going to the Rams if McVay was hired there, and they just hired him so I bet that's where Wade ends up.

Still small chance that he is staying. Joseph didn't say one way or the other in his press conference and there is some talk that they are still trying to work something out. So just have to wait and see.

It makes sense. They would pay him top dollar and his daughter lives there. Just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
Also balance out such a young hire in HC

Thanks for the memories Wade! 2 stints, 4 years, 1 SB...

Glad he went to the Rams and not an AFC team.

In Wade we trust!

Anthony Lynn to SD. Is Jason Vrable next?

I'm bummed we're losing the son of Bum but happy he ain't a Raider. He's going to make the Rams defense straight up nasty. Donald going to be DPOY

Has any coach had more star players under him than Wade?

He went from JJ Watt to Von Miller to Aaron Donald, those 1st team All Pros must be fun to work with.

Wait, are you the same Snakes Eyes that use to post at Mouth Off?

Congrats on Wade. I am glad the Rams got him if he was going anywhere.

Your players are going to love Wade. This is the one move so far coaching staff wise that could really come back to bite the Broncos.
