The Saints are currently 3-3, and realistically simply treading water .. Dennis Allen has connections to the Broncos, and obviously, connections with Sean Payton ..

As HC of the Saints, Payton hired Allen back in 2015, and ever since then, Allen's defense scheme has been present in New Orleans ... When Allen took over the unit, the Saints D ranked 32nd in points in 2015, and 31st in points in 2016. His first two years were underwhelming, but after that, the Saints D has improved greatly ..

From 2017 on, the Saints has ranked 10th, 14th, 13th, 5th, 4th, 9th, 6th. respecitively .. Allen turned this Saints defense from the worst unit in the NFL in 2015 and 2016, into a perennial top-10 unit from 2020 to the present ...

I would be open to, but not ecstatic if Dennis Allen were to be hired to be replace Vance ..

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on Dennis Allen

Would hiring Allen as DC be an underwhelming, retread hire, or, would this be a situation that might potentially align with the path Wade Phillips took - a good DC who didn't quite make it as a HC, but a guy who could take all his NFL experience and head a top NFL defense ??

His defense wasn’t great when he was here, but literally anything is better than Vance Joseph at this point.

Remember the Tebow season where Dennis Allen had that defensive unit bawling? We'd score only 13 points and still win? We'd complete only 2 passes and still win?

Yeah, those were good times.

Seriously, something about that team that season was just different. 8-8 but still won one of the most incredible playoff games in history. Low scoring offense, statistically bottom-3rd defense but still somehow a good unit.

That was a fun season. Way more fun than this season.

Allen is currently head coach of the Saints.

You expecting him to be fired soon?

Not during the season .. and while there is a lot of football remaining, Allen just does not have the "it" factor as a HC as the Saints are the definition of mediocre ... With first time HCs like Robert Saleh, Mike Mc Daniel and DeMeco Ryans having success - and also highly indentifiable personalities - it's hard to imagine the Saints sticking w Allen if they miss the playoffs

Saleh's record is 14-26 so I wouldn't say he is having success. Allen's record is 10-13 with the Saints and I think they still have a shot at winning that division. Also Gayle Benson strikes me as a pretty patient owner so not sure if he will get fired after the season.

I mentioned Saleh and McDaniel and Ryans more for their presence and personalities - each team has seem to really taken to adopting the HCs identity ..

The Jets had been a mess for a long time when Saleh took over, while the Saints had been a perennial contender - there's that, too ... I think the Jets are headed the right way, while the Saints are struggling with an identity crisis

Let's file this under Be Careful what you wish for...
I agree ... I'm not sold on Allen, just putting it out there to get the opinions ..

That division winning take doesn't look so good this morning.

I don't know whether to root for the Saints to win - which gives Allen a better chance at staying put .. or to lose, which would most likely lead to his job ..

I have no idea of the current relationship Allen has with Sean Payton, but Payton has demonstrated a knack for hiring ex Saints and guys he is familiar with -- something that became a problem with Shanny ...

Might as well be talking about John Elway coming back to play QB. I'm not sure why on earth anyone thinks Dennis Allen is going anywhere. The saints don't exactly coach hop.

Well, they really haven't had the need to coach hop with Sean Payton having been there for so long ..

I'm just tossing thoughts out .. I would lean towards "disappointed" at this point if Allen was the next DC, but if Sean Payton were to make the decision, I'd feel there was hope
