If the Sox don't hold the division lead, he might not even get the CY.

The small blemishes his last few starts won't help in the MVP

He's gonna need to be damn near perfect from here on out

Which is entirely possible

Sale turned to that slider to shut down the Blue Jays. Here's how he did it, courtesy of Sarah Langs of ESPN Stats & Info:

  • He used his slider 41 percent of the time, the fourth time this season he has used his slider at least 41 percent of the time. He hasn't allowed more than a run in any of those starts.

  • A lot of what he did was much more like the first-half Sale, rather than the guy who had a 5.40 ERA in August. He got swinging strikes on 27 percent of his sliders, his third-highest rate this season and highest since late June.

  • He got first-pitch strikes against 75 percent of batters, his highest rate since July 6.

And those guys listed by batters faced:

Chris Sale: 5173
Pedro Martinez: 5388
Kerry Wood: 5528
Randy Johnson: 5805
Nolan Ryan: 5844

I'm very pleased to learn that it's not fatigue, but that the Indians own the fuck out of him!

This year it has been pointed out to me that he hasn't been that bad against the Indians minus that one horrendous outing

Thursday: Sabathia vs Rodriguez
Friday: Gray vs Fister
Saturday: Tanaka vs Pomeranz
Sunday: Severino vs Sale

Sound about right for this weekend?

Friday - Toss up, which CC (one that beat them AT Fenway) and Which Rodriguez show up
Saturday - Fister has been great but he's due to have a stinker... Yankees Win
Saturday - SHOULD be a Red Sox victory... But same thing as Fister for Pomeranz
Sunday - SALE sail, sail away!

No mention of the 1 hitter thrown by Mr. Bundy?

He's been up and down this year but it's encouraging to see that he hasn't really missed any time this year, especially after all those injuries in the minors. Gausman's looked a lot better in the 2nd half as well though he still has some command issues. Still not a lot of help on the way though.

it's an award for the best pitcher in the league, not the best pitcher on a division winner.

You're preaching to the choir, but Bill James believes there's a correlation between CY Awards and the standings.

Orioles have 7 games left against the Yankees and 3 against the Sox. Since the Sox can't beat them I guess that's the Yankee's job.

this was more true about 10-15 years ago than it is now. Lee, Greinke, and Felix pitched for some pretty mediocre teams. Kluber pitched for a 3rd place team in 2014. Arrieta's Cubs finished 3rd in the division in 2015 (though they did win 97 games). Kershaw won in 2011 on an 82-79 Dodgers team over the likes of Hamels/Halladay/Lee and Kennedy on the 1st place D-Backs. Lincecum won his two Cy Youngs before the Giants won a WS, and one of those was on a 72-90 team.

Cool story, bro.

Seriously, I don't think it should have any baring on the CY, and I think it is less so than it used to be, but still, Bill James' formula for predicting CY includes a fairly significant adjustment for the standings and it's correctly identified 11 of the last 12 CY winners.
