As a fan of the Padres, Angels and Dodgers, it's heartbreaking to look at the chaos surrounding the Padres. I can't understand AJ Peller's thinking. When he signed this crop of free agency he was basically paying millions for unproven potential that would not only boost offensive output, but make the Pads an even worse defensive team. Well, the offensive output has failed to materialize and defensively, the Pads are a disaster. I saw Kemp track down what could be considered a routing fly ball against the Mets a couple of days ago, and because he was turned the wrong way, he made a rather awkward catch that could have easily been dropped. The Pads will end up shipping off Shields, Upton and Kimbrell and find themselves battling for the cellar this year.

giants make a move:suds:

Giants acquired RHP Mike Leake from the Reds in exchange for 1B Adam Duvall and RHP Keury Mella.

The Giants were unable to land the frontline starter they sought, but Leake isn't a bad backup plan. The right-hander boasts a 3.56 ERA on the season and has put up a 2.59 mark since the beginning of June. He'll bump Tim Hudson to the bullpen.

It was weird seeing the Giants linked with Hamels and Cueto. It made no sense - they have one of the most barren farms in the league. They did well to get Mike Leake for what they gave up. Mella's ceiling is probably a 3rd or 4th starter.

It's the hair. He's a rockstar. Women are hopelessly attracted to his natural charm and men of all sorts find him worthy of their utmost respect.

LOL @ that arrogant fool thinking he could do with a checkbook what no one since the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels have done and buy a team.

My hope every year for the teams I dislike (Angels, Cardinals, Giants) is that they make moves then tank. Tim Hudson is a decent dude but he's got a bad accent and it's time for him to relax and enjoy the checks he's getting for nothing, ala Barry Zito and Jake Peavy.

The Marlins have proven it CAN be done. But it is not easy compiling a team full of high-priced guys and winning right away.

I don't know what the price is on Kimbrel/T. Ross, but the Red Sox should be looking at both of them.

Interesting tidbit that may or may not mean anything:

Measured by team ERA, the three teams with the worst pitching staffs in the AL, Texas, Boston and Detroit, ranked 5th, 2nd and 3rd respectively in AL opening day payrolls. Three teams' average payroll was $168MM.

The three teams with the best pitching staffs in the AL, Oakland, Houston and Tampa Bay, ranked 13th, 15th and 14th respectively in payroll and averaged $77MM.

I wonder if AJ Preller's hairdo can work a deal for Mike Napoli?
