For the seven years he was there, the Yankees averaged 97 wins per season. He played 80% of their games with the above slash line. I'd be shocked if Cashman would call that a "terrible deal."

Fair enough. It sure seemed uglier in real time, but those numbers look just fine.

Oh and MD wants to talk trash about you dissing Teixeira.

I'm eating a lot of crow on him this year, but he declined for 5 years in a row prior to this one. I can't imagine anyone saw this coming!! And, for what it's worth, Dirt agrees that Teixeira has to be on the juice this year. This "bounce-back" is highly questionable, but I can't argue with the results.

His response: "Yeah, I was catastrophically off on him. Still shocked he's this utterly worthless. I was right about Fat Panda though!"

@cerealboi Tell him he was wrong about Chase Headley being good, too. He was thrilled when the Yankees retained him.

Arod too. Both Tex and Arod having their best seasons in years . . . Highly suspicious for a 39 and 35 year old.

I certainly wouldn't ... not this much though.

Nah. I didn't get into baseball until about 2001/2002 and was primarily a Red Sox fan until 2007, so I don't have any first-hand memories from the 90's or earlier.

What really pisses me off is that I was at World Series games in both '95 and '97, but didn't give a fuck about baseball - was just there to party. I would kill a stranger to see the Indians in the World Series at The Jake these days.
1995 was the best year EVER!!

Twitter question:

You can get out of either the Hanley, Panda, or Porcello contracts, which do you jettison? Even after today, Hanley appears to be winning so far.

Yeah....that's a fact. But it gives me hope for Papi to still be productive at some point.

Funny, Hanley is the one I would most want to keep. His deal is the shortest with only 3 years left after 2015.

What do you think has kept him productive to this point? Even a PED-enhanced body gets old at some point?

Fair enough. It sure seemed uglier in real time, but those numbers look just fine.

Honestly, I remember there being some pretty rough patches too, but overall, the numbers are pretty good.

I think if you had the ability to show those numbers to Cashman in 2001 and tell him that's what he'd get from Giambi for his $160MM, he'd take it.

Side note:
I used to fucking hate Giambi. I was lucky enough to be in a dugout loge at Jacob's Field -- the ones you see on TV directly behind home plate -- when the Yankees were playing. I printed up a big sign that said:

Helping
Giambi
Homer

and I heckled the fuck out of him every time he was within ear shot. That was back when Yankees fans were booing Arod. Once Arod was on deck, just glaring at me while I busted Giambi's stones, so I told him that I'd boo him, but I didn't want him to feel like he was at home. Fucking funny night. I don't think they were expecting that kind of hard time in Cleveland - particularly from that loge.

Then, when Giambi was an Indian, I really came to like him. Dude was playing because he loved to and you saw it glowing on his face with every HR he hit. Also, he's got that huge upper body with those skinny ass legs so he'd look like Mr Incredible running around the bases. Good times.

The argument was specifically he was less sucky than Panda. Not that paying 13M a year was a great deal in the first place. That Panda was about the same hitter, maybe a better hitter, but Headley was the much better defender.

Which has been mostly true. Panda has hit better, but is still a piss poor defender compared to him..

I said HE WAS THRILLED WHEN THE YANKEES RETAINED HIM!
