Bobby Bonilla's payday is here again.

Each year on July 1, from now until 2035, the former Major League Baseball player collects a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets.

The money is part of a deferred buyout deal – paid over 25 installments – that the team agreed to after the 1999 season. Bonilla was owed $5.9 million, but instead of simply footing the bill, the Mets agreed to a delayed annual payment plan that went into effect in 2011.

LOL I wonder if the owner of the Mets is a frequent Rent-A-Center shopper? Would require quite a hefty discount rate in order to value 25 annual payments of $1 million less than one $6 million payment right now.

Who was it that the New Jersey Devils wanted to pay $1 million a year for 100 years to get around the salary cap?

I remember it was a Russian player and the NHL vetoed that contract real quick.

Ilya Kovalchuk is back on the free-agent market, and talking already.

An arbitrator ruled Monday that the NHL acted correctly in voiding Kovalchuk's landmark $102 million contract with the Devils.

The league had rejected the 17-year contract, saying the longest deal in league history violated its salary cap.

The NHL Players Association filed a grievance against the league. A hearing was held last week and arbiter Richard Bloch sided with the league when he issued his ruling.

I don't know the answer to that question, but if I were a fan of the Devils, I would have much love for ownership's willingness to "take one for the team". In the case of the Mets, however, since there is no salary cap in MLB, I have to think that ownership enjoys taking one merely for its own pleasure.
