I know we've moved on but I thought I'd share this tidbit I read about the Giants and Harper (from MLB Trade Rumors):
The Giants’ top offer to Harper checked in at a hefty $310MM over a 12-year term, as first reported by Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area (via Twitter). The Giants would’ve been willing to go higher, according to Pavlovic, but they’d have had to push their final offer quite a ways north of $330MM given the discrepancy between taxes in California and taxes in Pennsylvania. At the end of the bidding, Boras asked the Giants to top the winning bid “by at least $20 million,” per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic (subscription link). San Francisco was long rumored to be interested in Harper only on a short-term pact, though it appears that the team did indeed step up and make a larger push for Harper in the late stages of negotiations. Notably, as Baggarly reports, team CEO Larry Baer says that it was president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi — not ownership — that “was the leading advocate for Harper.” While the Giants entered the fray relatively late in the game, Baer says the club’s interest emerged after Zaidi had spent time evaluating his resources and watching the market develop.

Well, the *type* of player that I would want are players like, say, José Peraza (hopefully with a few more walks and better defense) or Andrelton Simmons or Mallex Smith or ... Matt Duffy (with a tad better defense, hopefully).

The types of players that aren't appreciated enough (including by the Giants) : not a lot of power, but they hit for avg, take walks and either have good-to-pretty-damn-good (but not necessarily great) defense or a bit of speed. Not excelling in all things, in fact just being "good" in most, and maybe very good in one (that isn't HR power). They would probably be found playing SS or 2B or CF (but maybe RF or 3B). Hell, I want Bill Mueller; a guy that hits for AVG, and knows how to take a f**king walk.

I tend to agree. I've been thinking about this a lot in the NBA context, but it applies to MLB too. If you can just get a 40 man roster with 4 or less players who don't suck, you can compete. Elite talent is fun and all, but there's something to be said for not having bums (except Madison, obvo) on your roster. I think FZ gets this. Lots of NRIs, and a few guys like Parra will make the club. But there are going to be fewer and fewer Eugenio Velezes, old Hunters, and Casey McGeehees moving forward.

Somehow, I completely missed this and had to go looking for it after seeing BeerMe refer to tzill's 13 reasons for optimism. tzill, is that really you or have you created another alt and got lazy and didn't create a new name with it? I will say this imposter is good, making sure to loathe Holland in his post.

Damn you LHG...every freaking year we have to go through this.

YOU ARE ALL MY ALTS...

Lmfao. Got much respect for @tzill , but dude is the most optimistic poster ever...right up until game 1 pitch 1 is a ball. Then it’s moundshattery, mittfuckery, angry bochy time. It’s almost like the official changing of the guard from winter to spring.

You say that like it's a problem...

Think Bryce is a much better fit in Philly than here. Better ballpark, better lineup, better chance for success.

No ill will here, like Harper, but that would have been a noose around the G’s neck if he came here. Let Farhan do his hyperactive Fantasy Baseball thing, let Mac Williamson play (don’t know why people think Shaw is better?), let Duggar play, Maybin and Parra can share RF, hope for bounce back years from Belt and Posey.

If we’re not in contention (likely), hopefully Samgarbagejizza can pitch well enough to be traded along with Melancon and maybe find a sucker for Longoria at the trade deadline.

Only trade Bum, Smith or Watson if there is an overpay. If Bum doesn’t fetch a ransom, ironically enough, I’d rather we keep him and lose him for nothing.
Show him respect and let other players know how we operate here.

If Mac can stay healthy, I really like what he looks like after changing his swing to Toomgus North. I think he can be a difference maker.

Someone can correct me on this, but if he walks this offseason, don't we get a draft pick?

I'm not too familiar with how it currently works but I do know that the Giants have to offer him a QO and have it declined in order to get a draft pick. However, I know that not everyone can be given a QO but I assume he would be one that would fit that profile.

OK, my ADD-type personality must point out that it matters based on the # of games they play IN THE STATE. (The income taxes are split among *every* state they play in, on a pro-rated basis - you don't think the greedy basturds haven't been milking the sports world for decades?). Playing in the NL West means that the HOME games (81) as well as a sizable chunk of other NL West games (Padres, Dodgers) would be subject to CA taxes.

Playing for the Phils, he will also pay New York City income taxes (max 3.876%) in addition to those collected by NY state (6.85%) for the games he plays in NY (Mets). I'm not going to go thru all the states, but Penn has a flat 3.07% state tax. That's um, at least ( (.133 - 0.03 = 0.103) * 26000000 div 2 = $1.3M). Now, while that SEEMS like a lot of money, it's ... well, OK, it's a LOT of money, even if you use $100 bills to wipe your arse.
Not to mention that the perception is that your SF streets are heavy laden with human feces, used needles, homeless, and illegal alien criminals.

Not exactly attractive to someone like Kayla Varner Harper. You won't see it in the media, but you know it's true.

Yeah and since Harper never played in SF he never could have known that was all bullshit. Oh, right...

Hate to be the guy who craps in the punch bowl, but Fangraphs has us at 75 wins and Baseball Prospectus at 73 wins, both 2nd worst in the NL (Miami)

I know spring training is the annual renewal of hope, we all start 0-0 etc. But let's get real.

Grow up. You're as dumb as the other team saying everyone in flyover country is an inbred yokel living in a trailer park. Which they do.

One reason we don't look so good, we are the oldest team in the league. Players peak at age 27 according to Fangraphs, and good ones sometimes do even earlier like age 25-26. This is from an article about Harper, saying he may have already had his best season.

Not gonna get into politics, because I hate Dems and Reps. But the above, Mays, is the perception of every big city in the US. I hear the same about NY and Chicago. It’s what jealous folks who have never lived there say. Sure all the things you mentioned happen in these cities, but I’ve been to SF plenty of times without seeing any of the above. You think a rich players wife who will be escorted around town is going to be inundated with that scene? Or is it more just a political arrow to sling at SF?

Physical is a bit strong, but definite wrong doing there. Looked like he tried to rip away a cell phone from his wife. My guess is she caught him cheating, red handed. From the video I saw, it’s not like he beat the bejesus out of her. Still awful tho.

Its a domestic assault by law so he will be lucky if charges are not filed against him.

Oh I agree there. Although he’s rich rich, so you never know.

Just thought some of the titles I’ve seen thrown around on the internet seem pretty dramatic. Still, he should be in some trouble.
