Glad we could help the Yankees out with their 40-man conundrum.

I wonder if there is anyone worthy of us plucking away from another team via the Rule 5 draft this year?

If the Rangers are to sign Shohei Otani by Christmas, there's much to do in little time

The Rangers have several things going for them that makes them a favorite, though likely not the favorite. There are probably six to 10 teams with a legitimate shot at landing him.

Know this: The Rangers' financial advantage really doesn't matter. If Otani waits until he is 25 to come to the U.S., he would be an unrestricted free agent and would probably sign a contract worth $150 million or more. A player willing to forego that kind of money isn't likely to let $285,000 or so make a difference in where he signs.

If Otani's decision comes down to his best chance to win immediately, a team like the Yankees, Houston or Los Angeles Dodgers might have an edge. That is a real factor.

But if you thought Yu Darvish was an international man of mystery, Otani is a riddle wrapped inside an enigma. Nobody has any idea what will be the deciding factor.

The Rangers have laid groundwork in Japan for six years with strong scouting and by building relationships. The organization is well-regarded in a country where respect and trust are valued. Darvish was as successful -- perhaps moreso -- in the low-key environment the Rangers created as any Japanese pitching sensation who has come to the majors.

Executive Vice President for Communication John Blake helped ease the transition for Darvish and Daisuke Matsuzaka in Boston in dealing with a throng of Japanese media that chronicles the pitcher's every move and an American media that operates from a wholly different perspective to what the pitcher is used to.

And this should not be overlooked: Darvish has chosen to live in Dallas long term, a gesture that sends a message that it is a comfortable and welcoming community.

MLBPA Extends MLB-NPB Posting Negotiation Deadline

Negotiations regarding a new posting agreement between Major League Baseball and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball have been postponed, according to an announcement from the MLB Player’s Association. While the MLB and NPB seem largely on the same page, the union has the right to authorize any agreement and has engaged on the subject.

It’s a one-day extension at this time, per the MLBPA announcement. Last we heard, the union had set a deadline of 8pm EST today to get something done. With issues still remaining, though, the sides have evidently decided to keep talking for at least another day. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (
Twitter links) reported earlier that there was optimism on a deal, but that some “gaps” still remained.

The news is critical, of course, for the MLB move sought by Japanese superstar
Shohei Ohtani. For now, he remains in flux, with virtually every major-league organizations watching closely to see if and when he’ll formally be made available.

Morosi's Latest: Rangers, Cards, Rockies, Phillies

The Rangers “have had preliminary contact” with right-hander Alex Cobb’s representatives, Morosi writes. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported earlier this month that the starter-needy Rangers covet Cobb, one of the top hurlers on the open market. Cobb returned in earnest from 2015 Tommy John surgery last season to turn in a career-best 179 1/3 innings of 3.66 ERA pitching, with 6.42 K/9, 2.21 BB/9 and a 47.8 percent groundball rate.

So, he most likely ends up being the third #1 pick to never make the majors, I suppose. Crazy to think that all the drama surrounding him was supposed to harm the future of the Asstros.

They laid the hammer down. Should be interesting how these signings play out and if any special rules apply

Astros really benefited from their total tank philosophy and still despite signing blunders got some great players like Corea and Springer and benefited by the unfair rule to get Bregman and stick it to us. It is really a shame and despite some obvious good scouting which they now dumped BTW.

Maybe sour grapes but it is a tainted WS win IMO. Still ChiCubs did the same albeit not so dirty. A lot of suspicion

What is your take on Pentecost or Travis Dem? To me maybe Pentecost although we seem deeper at catcher.

I never cared for Demeritte when we had him. I really don't know anything about Pentecost. Well, I know about the Day of Pentecost, but not the player. lol
