I like Nestor Cortes over these other ones. He's younger than most yet has the most experience at AAA, with good numbers to boot.

It seems the Giants are one of 8 teams that went to the 5 pm PST deadline for setting their 40 for the Rule 5 draft.

Posted in the Current roster thread, but Slania was apparently DFA'd when Vielma was, but cleared waivers.
Was there anyone else dfa'd at that time? If not, then the 40 man roster is full and no one (Cortes) will be drafted in the Rule 5.

As far as I understand they don't need to have an open 40-man spot until the time of the draft.

That is true. Just don't see the Giants dfa'ing anyone else between now and December 17th, unless they need to make room for a free agent or trade acquisition.

Edit: Although it is possible a couple guys get non-tendered, so maybe they make room that way.

I think it's possible, with the addition of Herb, that Albert Suarez becomes a highly probably candidate.

Most of the pitchers on the 40-man are relievers. Suarez was one of the few pitchers with an ability to spot start which saved his spot. Blach and Gomez can, and now Herb.

Suarez is also out of options, while Blach, Gomez and Herb all have plenty of. Suarez is kinda redundant, and also just not very good. Tough to keep around.

Mark Appel (@calsnowskier) was outrighted to the minors today, by Philadelphia. Looks like the Giants weren't interested.

Unfortunately, they also weren't interested in Kyle Crockett. He got picked up by the Reds.

I would have been surprised had the Giants claimed him. I just threw his name out as a possibility.

It'd be disappointing if they just sold it off.
Meh.

Rule V picks rarely pay off. And basically, when they do, it is only for a VERY marginal player. Sure, there are Johan Santana’s and Dan Ugglas, but a better example of a good pick would be AU Valez.

I hope they use it on a player as well. That is more fun. But if it is sold, I am cool with that.
