Venus clearly isn't Serena but heck of a year in GS events this year excluding the French.

She has now made the 2nd week in all of the other 3 GS. QF at Australia and R16 at Wimbledon and the US Open. She has a damn good chance of making it to face her sister in the QF here.

Impressive for a 35 year old with health issues.

Honestly Id love to see her beat Serna in the quarters. I know its a slim slim shot but one last hoorah for Venus would be wayyy cool by me

You imply that the top women's tennis players are "bounced" by other players. They aren't. They lose because they play like hell.

Not necessarily. In tennis at any time someone will raise his/her game and play insane tennis and defeat a top player. The fact that it happens more often than not in women's game is a reflection of how competitive it is. It used to be in the '80s and early 90's when Martina and Chris before the advent of Steffi were so dominant. The same applied to when Steffi ran away with almost everything blowing away the competition until after the arrival of Monica Seles. Competitive tennis is a reflection of growth of the sport rather than the boredom of one or two individuals dominating the field.

Correct. Women's tennis is very sloppy and weak. 7 of 10 top seeds are out. You nailed it too. Its because the most of the top seeds still play like crap and can lose at any time.

I remember when Federer was losing consistently to Nadal and then Djokovic with others thinking he played like crap and he should hung up his racket. Now he has fine tuned his game to play some of his best tennis now. What you consider crap is more a reflection of others catching up. Change is the order of life, stagnation is death.

Bencic another overhyped player with zero weapons and an awful serve who got a bunch of press for a fluke win over an all time great at a warm up tournament.

Yet again, Serena comes out flat.

Mattek is fucking fit, though. Looks as muscular as Sam Stosur.

Women's Tennis is at its most pathetic era EVER. Which is why SW winning slams at her age is hardly surprising and the equivent of a penalty kick goal minus any goalie. I still don't get how someone as large as her weighing close to 200 lbs is moving around the court.

Serena in early trouble

Well let us see if Bethanie can keep this up. The thing with women tennis now is Serena would also need to keep up her game otherwise she s toast. This is competitive

Liberal Bacon its not competitive when an out of shape near obese player is winning slams. I remember during the Steffi era Davenport arrived with a hugely out of shape structure so much so that she used to be referred to as Davenpork in a tennis forum. Then she got in shape and was finally able to win slams and a Wombledon over an aging Steffi in her last year.

Agree.

Nice win today.

And at the FO, she had Sloan in the 1st round, so that wasn't going to be easy.

It was nice to see her beat Serena in Montreal last year, ending a drought of losing to Serena since 2008.

So could Strycova vs. Lisicki, and Azarenka vs. Kerber.
