That's a play-off team for under $140 mil. Take note, MLB.

We are going to need two more SP before I declare that a playoff roster. I think we have seen this year tha 5 starters is not enough you need to rest guys if you want to go in October. Additionally we can't have both Timmeh and Zito in the rotation one yes but not both.

Horseshit.

Both Tim and Zeets are getting paid 20MM+. They'll both be in the rotation.

I never said the won't - just that, that roster with no changes to the SP rotation + the loss of Melky's offense numbers is no lock as a playoff team.

I think the change will be Timmay coming back into his 2010-11 form. He is going to do what it takes to return to dominance. Anyway, 3 wins and WS here we come!

Melky is on that projected roster.

With this logic, let's sign Willie Mays up. Can you imagine him back in the OF?

Extreme retort, but do you REALLY expect 2013 Melky to be in the same ballpark as 2012 Melky?

I know Peguero is not ready. Brown is not ready. Panik is not ready. Bond is not ready.

(Susac is ready to jump from San Jose to the big time. Just chumming the water for tzill.)

I would love to see the team get a bit younger, and it will with Huffer limping to his retirement. And we cannot keep buying players like Pence, and CarBel, etc.

Why not put some of these guys in there and let them mature at the ML level, if they can handle it? Maybe other teams draft better than we do, but it seems like every playoff team this year (except the Spankees) has a wealth of good, young talent. Of course, that talent may have just thrived in the minors, where our minor league talent has not exactly left a large mark. But by all accounts, Pegs, Panik and Brown have major league talent.

Oh, that's right, Bochy would just bench them for the whole season after their first strikeout anyway.

Too early to be thinking off season. Here's to a clobbering of the Cards, and a complete game shutout by Zeets. 10-0.

What do you consider the same ballpark?

I did not even consider the multiple meanings of my post, but I will claim the witticism that Stokesy attributed to it :)

Melk was, at best, a #4 OF pre-2011. 2011 and 2012 he was all-star level or higher.

I would expect him to return to #4 OF quality. That is not the same ballpark.

This said, I am OK with a 2/12 contract. There is enough potential upside to make that a good deal.

Fine by me. Either way, less than $140 mil and a playoff roster. You and Oz can disagree, but the sixth starter and improved LF necessity is more of a postseason additive. Barring significant injuries, tzill's projected team should make the playoffs.

I see what you did there. But in all seriousness, the org must have felt pretty good about him to deal ToJo. Also, isn't it great that we have such depth at that position that Susac will have the luxury of playing every day in AA/AAA next year and won't be expected or allowed to get to the majors until at LEAST 2014?

I fucking LOVE this org.

Catcher Depth...

MVP
C3PO
Whitey
Williams
Susac

Susac is more valuable long term, but Williams is ready for MLB time now. He may push Whitey out of the org.

I turned back to this today. I think you're very close, here's my take:

SP
Z 20 fixed
Freak 22.25 fixed
Horse 20.83 fixed
Tron 5 fixed
Bum 0.95 fixed
Total 69.28

RP
Romo 12/3 years; 3-4-5
Loogy 4.25 fixed
KCya 3 (arb 4)
Affeldt 5 (fa)
Weez 4 (arb 4, cut and re-sign)
Mijares 3 (fa)
Total22.25

C
MVP 26/4 years; 2-5-8-11
Chez3 0.5
Total 2.5

IF
Pick 0.5
Moped 12/2 years; 6-6
Panda 5.7 fixed
Fish 0.5
Kobe 1 (arb1)
Riot 2 (fa)
Pill 0.5
Total16.2

OF
Herk 36/3 years; 11-12-13
Oxy 27/3 years; 8-9-10
Melkman 12/2 years; 6-6
Shark 1 (arb2)
Peggs 0.5
Total 26.5

Dead Money: Huff 2 buyout

TOTAL PAYROLL138.73

Let's suppose that the M's are not able to re-sign Iwakuma. We trade Timmah to them for Walker and Treyvon Robinson. This lowers our payroll by $22MM and gives us this:

SP: Cain/Bum/Tron/Z/Walker
RP: same
C: same
IF: same
OF: Melky/Oxy/Twitchy/Shark/Robinson

Est Payroll: About $118MM

Leaving us a bunch of cash for a midseason move or a FA. Avail FAs:

Cano
Bourn
Hamilton
Upton

interesting times we live in.

And much better than a bloated payroll with almost no farm system. It's exciting to see the Giants, Niners and Warriors with clear, attainable goals for sustained success. Now, if I only understood Doug Wilson's plan...

No matter what the roster looks like in 2013, I fully expect all starting nine in the 2013 All-Star game to be Giants. I'm getting my BOTS all tuned up.
