Offensively, UK has the better line up - but with Bonds in there at #3, that's just something that isn't surprising (even if you only look at pre-roids Barry). His team does lack speed (especially if playing roids Barry), but teams don't have to steal bases to win, and you don't need a lot of speed to get to second (look at Edgar Martinez).

Defensively, it's tight, but I lean toward Smitty. There are some really good defensive players on these teams (Hernandez at first, Dale Murphy in the OF, etc.), but despite both teams having HoF SS, neither was really a great fielder (solid, maybe, but not great). I always feel that a defense is started up the middle (2B, SS & CF) and UK's team doesn't really have a better than average fielder at any of those positions, where Smitty has Biggio (2B) and Murphy (CF). Catcher is really another very important defensive player (for different reasons), and both teams have solid catchers, though UK's C may be a little better defensively.

The Bench would go to Smitty. His bench has consistently come out on top, but not carrying a back up catcher concerns me. Yes, Biggio is the back up catcher, but that means he has to replace Parrish with Roberts (his only back up second baseman) if he were to catch Biggio. Biggio was a below average catcher (yes he was an all star there, but not for his fielding) and Roberts is the perfect example of jack of all trades, master of none. So, in essence, to give Parrish the day off, he would have to weaken two positions defensively.

Both rotations are solid, and Johnson on top of UK's rotation is killer, but Smitty has Tanana @ #2 slot, and that's just as bad for Steib as Johnson is for Morris. The next two matchups are close, and I would lean heavily toward Gubicza over Moore. If the series goes six, it's UK's team, if it goes 7 it's most likely Smitty.

The Bullpen is as much in UK's favor as the bench was in Smitty's, though both teams went heavy on guys with a lot of saves.

In the end, I lean ever so slightly to UK. He has the two best players on here (Bonds, Johnson), other than those 2 (and Tanana from Smitty) the teams are pretty much a dead heat.

I think team UK would win in 6. Very close series, I just think they'd score more runs and have a hammer in Johnson in a 7 game

UK wins

C - Alomar Jr - Parrish : Parrish was a better hitter and fielder = Smitty
1B - Hernandez - Murray : I personally would rather have Hernandez on my team but Murray and his 500 3,000 can't be ignored = Smitty
2B - Franco - Biggio : I was always a big fan of Julio but I gotta give the edge here to Biggio = Smitty
SS - Yount - Ripken : Most will disagree with me but I believe Ripken was a selfish player who put the streak ahead of his team. Being a Twins fan I hated Yount but man he was good = UK
3B - Caminiti - Fryman : Was never a fan of either player slight edge to Ken = UK
LF - Bonds - Coleman : Bonds is the best player in all of our lifetimes = UK
CF - Carter - Murphy : Most might think this is a close one, I think Murphy was easily the better player - Smitty
RF - Gonzalez - Winfield : Gonzalez was one of the most feared players in the league for a good 5 year run but Winny did it for much longer and was a pretty good fielder in his younger years = Smitty
DH - Lansford - Strawberry : I thought Carney was a pretty good player for a while but Strawberry was a much better player = Smitty

Hitters Smitty - 6 : UK - 3

SP1 - Johnson - Morris : Morris was a very good pitcher for quit a long time and his game 7 of the 91 series is IMO one of the best pitching performances of all time but no pitcher in this mock is better than the Big Unit = UK
SP2 - Stieb - Tanana : Steib was a great pitcher but Tanana for the first 4 or 5 years of his career was amazing as much as I like Stieb I gotta lean Frank here = Smitty
SP3 - Scott - Appier : Appier was tough on my Twins but Scott was the better pitcher = UK
SP4 - Reuss - Rijo : Jerry was a good pitcher for quit a while but if I had to choose one of these guys to pitch a big game for me I take Jose = Smitty
SP5 - Moore - Gubicza : Moore IMO was the better pitcher = UK

Starting Pitchers UK - 3 Smitty - 2

Bench - I believe this is clearly an advantage for Smitty = Smitty

Bullpen - I really like both pens but give the advantage to UK on this one = UK
Because the bullpen is so important in this I award 2 pts to UK.

Totals : Smitty = 9 : UK = 8

Winner = Smitty

We still need WLK, Steve & Hockey to vote...

After reading WAY TOO much about a bunch of guys I will never talk about again unless we do another draft where these guys are eligible I have come to a decision... Next time I'll read what Stokes said and what Nos said and decide from there!:noidea:

Seriously though... I knew a little bit about a few and looked mostly at wiki and some stats to get a better understanding about what both teams wanted and what both teams could do... I think with the best player (Bonds) and pitcher (Johnson) I could easily have just said UK and it would be fine... But the more I kept hearing about Tanana I wanted to get a look at that guy, he was an animal... 2 13 inning shut outs and 34 total shutouts... It closed the margin in the pitching staff then I recalled an earlier voter stated that same thing... Anyhow after looking and comparing it came down to these 2 teams are pretty disgustingly good... I tried to put it in the simulator at whatif .com I think it was but they kept asking me for credit card info and I don't plan on going there much so I declined... What I ended up coming to is this is a game of preference that could only be truly answered on the field... So I went with team Smitty... Great job by you both! :suds:
