I thought about this for the last couple of weeks, and I am actually starting to dig a 12-team playoff over the popular 4-8 team playoff.
BASIC STRUCTURE
- Every FBS team plays 12 regular season games. Obviously sometimes this doesn't occur due to the weather and so forth, but generally speaking, every team plays 12 regular season games.
- No conference championship game.
- The Army-Navy Game gets bumped up one week. No other game gets played. It's still their weekend.
- Seeds 1-4 get two bye weeks. Seeds 5-12 get a one week bye.
- Rounds 1-3 get played at campus sites.
- Round 4 is played on a BCS Bowl site, determined ahead of time.
- No team plays more than 16 games in a season.
WHAT WOULD THE 2018 POSTSEASON SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE
December 1st - Army-Navy Game
December 7th and 8th - Round one (seeds 5-12 play)
December 14th and 15th - Round two (seeds 1-4 and the victors from round one play)
December 21st and 22nd - Round three (semi-finals)
December 29th-31st and Jan 1st - Bye week
January 7th - National Championship game
WIGGLE ROOM
- A committee ranks the top 25 teams. They can simply take the top 12 ranked teams straight up OR take the top 7 conference champions and 5 wildcards from the top 25 list.
- We average together the committee's rankings AND the computer rankings for our top 25 list.
- Rounds three takes place on New Years Day and on a BCS Bowl site. Round four takes place on Friday, January 11th.
PROBLEMS IT SOLVES
- Gives the G5 programs the opportunity to get in. The current system does not.
- Every team plays the same number of regular season games. No team benefits from missing the conference championship game.
- The top 4 seeds gets rewarded with two weeks off AND a second round playoff game at their home turf.
- Seeds 5-8 are guaranteed at least one home game.
- The Bowls are still relevant, especially if we put round 3 on BCS bowl sites.
