I thought about this for the last couple of weeks, and I am actually starting to dig a 12-team playoff over the popular 4-8 team playoff.

BASIC STRUCTURE

- Every FBS team plays 12 regular season games. Obviously sometimes this doesn't occur due to the weather and so forth, but generally speaking, every team plays 12 regular season games.
- No conference championship game.
- The Army-Navy Game gets bumped up one week. No other game gets played. It's still their weekend.
- Seeds 1-4 get two bye weeks. Seeds 5-12 get a one week bye.
- Rounds 1-3 get played at campus sites.
- Round 4 is played on a BCS Bowl site, determined ahead of time.
- No team plays more than 16 games in a season.

WHAT WOULD THE 2018 POSTSEASON SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE

December 1st - Army-Navy Game
December 7th and 8th - Round one (seeds 5-12 play)
December 14th and 15th - Round two (seeds 1-4 and the victors from round one play)
December 21st and 22nd - Round three (semi-finals)
December 29th-31st and Jan 1st - Bye week
January 7th - National Championship game

WIGGLE ROOM

- A committee ranks the top 25 teams. They can simply take the top 12 ranked teams straight up OR take the top 7 conference champions and 5 wildcards from the top 25 list.
- We average together the committee's rankings AND the computer rankings for our top 25 list.
- Rounds three takes place on New Years Day and on a BCS Bowl site. Round four takes place on Friday, January 11th.

PROBLEMS IT SOLVES

- Gives the G5 programs the opportunity to get in. The current system does not.
- Every team plays the same number of regular season games. No team benefits from missing the conference championship game.
- The top 4 seeds gets rewarded with two weeks off AND a second round playoff game at their home turf.
- Seeds 5-8 are guaranteed at least one home game.
- The Bowls are still relevant, especially if we put round 3 on BCS bowl sites.

(1)Clemson (12-1)
(2)Oklahoma (12-1)
(3)Georgia (12-1)
(4)Alabama (11-1)

(12)UCF (12-0) @ (5)Ohio St (12-1)
(11)Washington (10-2) @ (6)Wisconsin (12-1)
(10)Miami (10-2) @ (7)Auburn (10-3)
(9)Penn St (10-2) @ (8)USC (11-2)

I would vote this down. I wouldn't go more than 8, but I do respect your desire for a playoff that's more than 4 teams. Some on this board think you will need to be institutionalized for thinking more than 4 would be better.

Here's what a 16-team playoff would look like if you took all 10 conference champions and 6 at-larges. You could have some double byes to keep the bloodbaths to a minimum. I'm not in favor of this, but this is how it could look.

2-round bye
(1)Clemson (12-1)
(2)Oklahoma (12-1)
(3)Georgia (12-1)
(4)Alabama (11-1)

1-round bye
(5)Ohio St (11-2)
(6)Wisconsin (12-1)
(7)Auburn (10-3)
(8)USC (11-2)

1st round
(9)Penn St (10-2) vs (16)Troy (10-2)
(10)Miami (10-2) vs (15)Toledo (11-2)
(11)Washington (10-2) vs (14)FAU (10-3)
(12)UCF (12-0) vs (13)Boise St (10-3)

2nd round
(5)Ohio St vs (12)UCF
(6)Wisconsin vs (11)Washington
(7)Auburn vs (10)Miami
(8)USC vs (9)Penn St

Quarterfinals
(1)Clemson vs (8)USC
(4)Alabama vs (5)Ohio St

(2)Oklahoma vs (7)Auburn
(3)Georgia vs (6)Wisconsin

Semifinals
(1)Clemson vs (4)Alabama
(2)Oklahoma vs (3)Georgia

Championship
(1)Clemson vs (2)Oklahoma

My God. This is so simple. Somebody call somebody with the NCAA. If Boise St or FAU were to run the table they'd be 15-3. Sweet.

I have always said 12. I prefer a system with byes. That is huge incentive for finishing the season strong. It doesn't make a lot of sense in sport where teenagers regularly make big contributions that a early season loss can end your title hopes.

Not a bad format. I still would prefer an 8 team playoff. I think it solves most of the problems that your 12 yeam playoff does and gives the "no more than 4" folks less to bitch about. But I wouldn't complain about this one.

The problem isn't the number of teams in the playoff...the problem
is the selection of the team(s).

There is no consistency...NONE! Just double-talk, spin and remarks
that contradict each other.

It's like Conference/Division alignment. The ACC and the Big10 for
a short period of time, had divisions that were confusing to fans.

The Big10's Leaders and Legends was atrocious. But they learned
and expanded and went to an East-West setup. Everybody could understand that. And then they could take interest and follow it.

For a playoff...the fans MUST be able to track it themselves.
They have to understand how a team will be selected. Putting
13 people, in a back room is not something anybody can follow.
It's simply using "another man's opinion" as to who gets selected.

Those 13 get influenced by ESPN who is loaded with folks that
no nothing and the majority on this board, cannot stand. Yet,
we cede to their hype. It's Bullshit.

What always separated College Football from every other sport
was, you only got one chance to beat somebody. Now we're being
reduced to being like Basketball where teams face each other 3 times a year or god knows how many times in baseball.

Plus we don't even allow for the rare upset. This is set-up to
eliminate half the teams (65) before play even begins.

It's all a waste of time debating this shit.

Well expanding makes the selection process less important. It was everything when it was 2 games. It's important with 4 teams, but not nearly as a big of an issue as with the prior system.

Reason I prefer 12 over 8, is the bye format. That makes securing a top 4 seed paramount. It also makes the road to the championship much harder for lower seeds.

True. The bye part of the format does make it pretty interesting and I do agree with making the road to a title tougher for lower seeds.

While I think 12 is entirely excessive and unnecessary, at least the one proposed here doesn't take auto bids for conf champions so it's not a total and complete waste of time. The folks that keep banging that drum make me question their ability to actually think.

Not in favor of removing the CCG's just as a means to clear the way for more playoff rounds.

This is why I'm in favor of two different playoffs, the P-5 and G-5.
P-5
(1)Clemson (12-1) vs (8)USC (11-2)
(4)Alabama (11-1)* vs (5)Ohio St (11-2)

(2)Oklahoma (12-1) vs (7)Auburn (10-3)*
(3)Georgia (12-1) vs (6)Wisconsin (12-1)*
------------
G-5
(1)UCF (12-0)
(2)Memphis (10-2)*

(3)Boise St (10-3) vs (6)Troy (10-2)
(4)Toledo (11-2) vs (5)FAU (10-3)
(*)at-large

It was tough coming up with 8 G-5 teams so I made it 6. I'm in favor of 6 for both, but I can live with 8.

I would like to see 8 teams as well...........But I prefer the 12 team format to the current 4 team.
