Boston just extended Dustin Pedroia through 2021 - giving him an additional $100 million. That is an AAV of $14.28 until the Red Sox 2B is 38 years old.

He is the first $100 million 2B in MLB.

Worth it?

For what he does for the Sox on and off the field, he is certainly worth it. This was really a 6 year extension, as the Sox just tacked on to his 2015 option, which was $11mm. Pedroia will make $10mm this season and next.

Given that, a raise is in order for the guy that is the unofficial captain (and soon maybe official) of the team. He plays well. He plays hard. He is a mentor to the younger players.

When cano signs his contract, he could likely get $175mm for 7 years. Is he really worth $10mm more per season than Pedroia? Not in my opinion.

Pedoia plays the game hard, while Cano coasts. My bet is that the Sox will get far more value from Pedroia than the Yankees (whoever?) when they re-sign Cano over the remainder of the contracts.

This is the best news Yankee fans have had this year as Robinson Cano's dreams of an Arod/Pujols type contract just vaporized.

Well, it makes Ian's contract look all that much better.

Is this worth 14.28 a year?

.308 6 HRs 57 RBIs

MLB Ranks for 2nd Basemen

5th in Avg
2nd in OBP
8th in slugging pct
Tied for 15th in HRs
5th in RBIs
2nd in Runs
3rd in SBs

But he is 1st in ABs

He is a great defensive 2nd baseman and is durable starting 100 of the 102 games this season.
But 14+ mil a year for a 2nd basemen with not much power. Very questionable but still a great player.

2nd basemen aren't known for hitting for power. But it's not like he's Juan Pierre. Pedroia has put up decent power numbers before. Pedroia does everything else very well.

That's an excellent extension. Given market inflation, that sub-$15 million per year AAV is going to be very nice by contract's end. He's got a track record of production (he gets on base and plays very good defense, the two most important skills for a second baseman) and health.

Good signing for the Sox.

:omg:

That's over $1.5 million per inch. Or over $800K per pound.

One thing we're forgetting here is consistency...from what it seems like, the shelf life for "good 2B" isn't very long on the whole, and there's a good amount of fluctuation (I mean, a guy guys like Howie Kendrick, Kelly Johnson, Rickie Weeks, Dan Uggla or Omar Infante can be good one yet and very mediocre/poor the next)....Pedroia's never had anything resembling a mediocre/poor year, and that's certainly one of the factors to locking him up long term.

He's only been a hair better. Pedroia is still way better at his best

Pedrioa has track record...but Kipnis "best" probably hasn't been seen. Giving he is just getting into his prime...

The question of "who has had a better career" is different than "who would you rather have, today and going forward"

Right now? Probably peddy, but ask me this question at the end of year, may be different. I need to see how Kipnis finishes this season.

Going forward, odds are he going to hit for more Power, and bring more Speed, and has shown he is just as good as drawing walks. Strikeout rates are the difference right now. (at least on the offensive end)

But all of his underline stats like O-swing, StrkSwing are heading in the right direction...

"why won't ESPN give my Marlins more attention????"

Probably because they suck.

Yep, in 2012, the Red Sox deserved all of their air time on E!SPN. And the segments were also well deserved too.

BTW...Over the last 95 years, Marlins and Red Sox = 2 championships. Of course the Marlins have only been around for 20 of those seasons. But I guess that Marlins fans can feel the pain of the Red Sox since the fish haven't won a series in 9 going on 10 seasons, but let's not split hairs between their drought and the Red Sox drought from 1918 to 2004.
