Pats trade up to 85 from the Lions. Draft Antonio Garcia T from Troy. Possible replacement for Solder.

Antonio Garcia did not allow a sack in more than 900 offensive snaps in 2016, on an offensive line that led in the country in fewest sacks allowed (9). He should fit well in a Patriots trench that ranked ninth in fewest sacks allowed last season.

Two-time FCS All-American Derek Rivers left Youngstown State as the program's career record holder in sacks (41), which also ranks in the top five in FCS history.

The Patriots have selected Youngstown defensive end Derek Rivers with their initial draft choice, No. 83 overall (third round). Rivers set a school record with 41 sacks, totaled 35 repetitions on the bench press, and his 2.53-second 20-yard split was among the best at the position and an indication of his burst. He was a pre-draft visitor to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium.

Garcia went to Troy as Basketball player and really started filling out and decided to play football. Right now he weighs about 290 lbs. He started the year at 302 and lost 20 lbs during the season and just couldn't gain it back. Patriots nutritionists and trainers gave him a weigh and work out program during his two (2) yes. 2 (two) visits to Foxboro for meetings with Caserio and Belichick and then with Dante Scarneccia. He has incredible lateral movement and may have had the quickest feet of any lineman in college. He never practiced 1 on 1 with defensive linemen, he always practiced against 2. Saw the films last night and was very impressed. Patriots plan to build him up to about 310-312 and he is the heir apparent to LT.

Very interesting comments on NFL Network and ESPN about the Patriots picks. Neither of the Patriots' picks were on Kiper's or Mayock's boards. They had snipets on both but couldn't understand why their "Best Available Players" were overlooked.

Pretty simple.........Patriots don't use the same rating system as everyone else. They have a system that pulls players from outside of the 'experts' circle. Once Mayock or Kiper or Walter start putting names out on their websites, everyone starts focus on those players and those players are the talk of everyone until the draft begins.
Except the Patriots. They use a totally different evaluation system and have rarely ever picked a Mayock or Kiper top ten if they've been near the top or middle of the draft.

I've been in the Patriots Draft Room and have seen the white boards. They have a concensus board that has all of the media picks and they have a "Rated" board that Nick Caserio and Bill Belichick work on from February to April.
They fight for every player on that board and argue with each other as to who should be rated where. When Draft Day arrives, there are no arguments, no fights.......the players are up and names are removed as they are drafted. The Rated Board is totally different than the Concensus Board.

The Patriots may miss here and there but.............

11 Straight AFC East Championships
6 Straight AFC Championship Games, 9 AFC Championship Games in 17 years
5 Super Bowl Championships in 17 years

Yeah I agree, people tend to put way to much into Kiper and Mayock I have always felt that way.

I like it. A better chance for picking a diamond in the rough.

In acquiring TE James O'Shaughnessy from the Chiefs, the Patriots add an AJ Derby-type "move" player to their ranks. Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen are locks as the top two tight ends, and the 6-4, 245-pound O'Shaughnessy will compete with Matt Lengel (6-7, 266) and Michael Williams (6-6, 280) for the No. 3 role. Lengel and Williams have a different physical makeup as bigger tight ends, so O'Shaughnessy's skill set is different than anything the team had in the competition for the No. 3 role.

The Patriots have acquired TE James O'Shaughnessy and a sixth-round pick (216) from the Chiefs in exchange for a fifth-round pick (No. 183). The 6-foot-4, 245-pound O'Shaughnessy entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2015 out of Illinois State. He has played in 23 regular-season games, totaling eight catches for 86 yards.

The Patriots selected Arkansas DE Deatrich Wise with their fourth-round pick, as the team double dips at a position that was its top area of need entering the draft. The 6-foot-5, 274-pound Wise has some rare physical traits that naturally appeal to the Patriots, such as 35 5/8-inch arm length and 10 1/2-inch hand size. He plays with power and took a pre-draft visit to New England, so he was very much on the team's radar. In 2015, the Patriots struck gold with a long-armed DE from Arkansas in Trey Flowers. Now they hope the Wise pick pays off similarly.

DE Deatrich Wise said that he views fellow Arkansas alum and Patriots DE Trey Flowers as a mentor. "He taught me how to watch film, he taught me how to play certain positions, and on top of all that just the mindset you have to have to go into a game, to go into a practice, to go into life," Wise said on a conference call. "I have a great relationship with Trey and I'm looking forward to meeting him up there and working with him."

The Patriots made a trade up in the sixth round to select UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott with the 211th overall pick. The team shipped its sixth rounder (216) and seventh rounder (239) to Dallas to make the pick. McDermott is 6-foot-8 1/8 and 307 pounds, fitting the profile of a Patriots lineman in the sense that he is long and athletic. The Patriots made only four selections in the draft, double dipping at offensive tackle and defensive end.

Former high school basketball star Conor McDermott has some of the biggest hands (11 inches) among offensive linemen in this year's draft class. The two-time second-team All-Pac 12 selection made 31 career starts in 36 games at UCLA, including 12 starts at left tackle in 2016.

The Patriots have no other picks in the 2017 draft, so unless they trade back in, here is the roster math: They had 65 players entering the draft, made four picks and traded for Chiefs TE James O'Shaughnessy, and now have 20 spots to fill with free agents (veteran and undrafted).

Now the Patriots make hay. This is where they excel. Every year for the past 6 or 7 years they've sign an undrafted free agent who's come in and made the roster by just being an outstanding football player. Of course the most famous recently is Malcolm Butler. Then there's James Andrews. I'll be up and out early Monday morning to get a Boston paper with the UFA signing list.

I am sure I am not the only one that noticed this trend and I don't see it a lot with other teams but BB and Casario like to double up at positions. Recently they have done it with T, DE, G, TE and I think RB seems there must be a method to this madness?
