Two-time FCS All-American Derek Rivers left Youngstown State as the program's career record holder in sacks (41), which also ranks in the top five in FCS history.
The Patriots have selected Youngstown defensive end Derek Rivers with their initial draft choice, No. 83 overall (third round). Rivers set a school record with 41 sacks, totaled 35 repetitions on the bench press, and his 2.53-second 20-yard split was among the best at the position and an indication of his burst. He was a pre-draft visitor to the Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
Film Review: Derek Rivers – third round pick, first round value
"Derek Rivers of Youngstown State, was one of the biggest steals of the draft. My 14th ranked player in this class, Rivers inexplicably was there when the Patriots were on the clock at pick 72, and then incredulously was still available....."
