Well shit ! That sucks. That is what tells the coil when to spark.

You changed the coil too, so...it's not that. Check distributor cap and rotor for damage. Look inside cap for crack...

Something is causing you to lose fire.

Ok...try this. Once you get it cranked and running again....before it dies...spray some starter fluid in carb.

It should continue to run with you spraying starter fluid every second or so. If it still runs then its not the spark, it's a fuel problem. If it doesn't then it's a spark problem.

If it is not an ignition problem the engine should keep running with starter fluid. It doesn't appear from the short video that it died from lack of fuel source though. It shut down at every cylinder at once.

If it was a fuel problem it would have chugged and sputtered. If it was a vacuum leak it probably could be heard whistling or hissing. If you don't hear that then I would still think it's an issue with spark.

I bought a new cap and rotor, but the ones on there are like new. I am going to change them and the plug wires today anyway, and just keep the ones on there for spares. There is a condensor, that connects to the coil, that the parts store did not stock, and said they didnt have a way to order it. Its the little copper loking thing next to the coil. Mine is not copper in color and looks aluminum.

No hissing/whistling, that I can hear. Is it possible the vacuum advance on the distributor is bad? do I need to swap the entire distributor if it is?

I'll bet that in 1978, Ford built something into the distributor that retarded the timing after warm up, to reduce emissions.

Don't know if that is a vacuum signal, something that opens the vacuum signal, the actual part in the distributor, or a loose/broken/grounded wire somewhere.

But since you have tried everything else, I'd go down that path.

If you replace the distributor, see if there is a difference between that year and a prior year, when it comes to the emissions crap. It makes a difference on how it performs.

As for distributor, if anything would go bad and still allow engine to start , it would be the distributor pickup.

Be careful when changing this when you take the star gear on top off you don't lose the pin that holds in on.

I had a buddy come over and I think We figured out that the vacuum advance is bad. The rubber diaphram was blown out, as evident by air blew right trough the fucking thing when I put some to it. Vac advance.jpg


I am getting great spark, even when the engine dies. Still have good spark even when it wont start, and you can smell unburnt/partially burnt fuel, like it is firing but wrong timing. Going to change that out tomorrow and see what happens.
