Oregon Is Faster
What a disaster of a process
Yep.What a disaster of a process
He will likely be able to keep that offense dangerous. Might be able to recruit and at least salvage this class that has been falling apart. But his defenses haven't been good either. His choice of DC will be the make or break deal for his tenure. Ducks haven't had a D since Aliotti retired and Hoke only broke it more.Taggart has done a fine job at USF. I am not an alumnus, but Tampa is my home town and current residence so I do follow USF sports loosely. Any head coach at USF is competing with UF, FSU, and Miami for recruits. Plus other G5 schools like UCF and what not. It's not an easy gig.
Here's a look at the last several years of USF football.

It took him a few years but he took a bottom dwelling team and made them very good. The USF fanbase is sad to see him go. Only time will tell if he's the right person for the job at Oregon.
That they weren't after a defensive minded coach is just mind blowing to me. I get there's only so many to go around, but damn... I wonder if Schiano laughed when they asked if he was interested. He will likely be able to keep that offense dangerous. Oregon built a hell of a run with an offensive minded program that was at times just so so on defense. It's hard to throw that mindset out entirely. That they weren't after a defensive minded coach is just mind blowing to me. I get there's only so many to go around, but damn... I wasn't all for the pure defensive minded coach and Schiano and his Penn State days can stay at shady Ohio State. That they weren't after a defensive minded coach is just mind blowing to me. Firstly, I'm not shocked you don't want a defensive guy. I get offense is your thing. But I'm not suggesting you need to do a 180. Get a good offensive coordinator who can keep that going. You have the pieces in that area. Your defense is a mess. If it were me, I'd want a guy at the top of the staff who will make fixing it a priority, and who can do it without necessarily having to find a great defensive coordinator.I wasn't all for the pure defensive minded coach and Schiano and his Penn State days can stay at shady Ohio State.
I am not one to say a team needs to go full 180 when something isn't working. Then the pendulum swings too far the other way and in a few years you are wanting to go 180 again. It is important to find that balance.
Taggart is a great guy and earlier I said this would be a fine hire. This obviously before I heard the strong chances of Chip returning.
Unfuckingbelievable Rob Mullens and PK didn't back up the Nike 18 wheeler full of cash and tell Chip it is his. Shit maybe even tell Chip he can have share of Nike.
Taggart has two jobs right now: Shore up and salvage this recruiting class and find the very best DC they can get. Do both of those and you guys will be just fine. 11-1, 12-0 fine? Probably not right away. Don't go all jumping overboard if it takes a season or three to get his culture in and move the needle where you want it. Petersen had kids he had to toss off the team and/or quit the team and some were big names. It still didn't take a full house cleaning to get UW up and there is plenty of talent at UO to rebuild off so it shouldn't take 4+ years there either.I wasn't all for the pure defensive minded coach and Schiano and his Penn State days can stay at shady Ohio State.

From what I heard they were after a guy that would bring the right culture. It was about his character and how he runs his program that prompted this move. Helf wasn't hard enough on the kids that weren't performing and wasn't inspiring them to do more. Great guy, smart coach, but wasn't doing what HC's at this level must do to keep their kids attention and focus.
I still think this class will be hard to build back up into a top 10 class because it wasn't a very splashy move, but go win games next year and fix that defense and future classes will be just fine for them.
The key is they really must do something major at DC. You know, like this time picking a guy that has ran a defense at a high level before at least.

No, I didn't say three bad years. Read it again. I said 2-3 years to get to 11+ wins as you expect. I mean if you honestly have 11 wins or bust for next season as your expectation I predict this is going to be a hell of a fun ride on the hoop next season with your threads.I stopped reading after you said if he takes three seasons to get things going. No effin way he lasts if he has 3 bad years. Helfrich was fired for one bad season.
This is a win now program and win now opportunity. If he doesn't get this thing going right away then he is gone.
The most important question at this point is, can OD be patient? My money is on no, so the future of SportsHoopla is bright.
