I've heard the same thing. In fact, I've heard even Patterson admits he's not blue blood material.

As far being a prick, not many successful head CFB coaces aren't pricks. And you nearly have to be at one of the non blue bloods if you are going to be worth a damn. Good guys don't have much of a chance at those jobs without being one IMHO.

For quality of life USC is the best and it's not close. That's the ONLY job at a blue blood school where you can lead a normal life. The USC coach can go get dinner without being hounded, he can run to the store and get left alone. Texas, Bama, LSU, OSU etc are ALL great jobs but in those towns you are the major rock star in town. You can't lead a normal life.

Easy now.

Listen, Texas should be top 3 coaching gigs around. The problem is the Big XI will suck until it's gets a conference championship, and you're in a State that has many teams that historically aren't great, winning and going to big bowls, while you struggle for a good season. I have always kind of liked Texas since Vince beat USC on his own, but the truth is, Marcel's hit on Colt McCoy in the NC was the end of UT, at least up until now.

UT will come back, and win more National Championships, but as a coaching gig, it's no less pressure filled than Bama is. Great programs expect results...yesterday.

Difference is Texas is the flagship school of the best recruiting state in the country, so that makes it probably the best coaching job in America. Bama is a great job, but rely's on the tal

They got any all-you-can-eat restaurants in Austin? If so they better close 'em down. Charlie Weis & Brady Hoke are touring the country & stopping @ every all-you-can-eat joint w/i a 50 mile radius of their travels. They'll be in Austin by Friday afternoon & they'll be hungry.

No kidding. Would you rather be on a high wire at a "super blue blood" school making $5.5 Million/year or at a good school making $3 Million/year knowing if you go 9-3 on a consistent basis and beat a "super blue blood" occasionally you are in a comfortable position? And who knows? Maybe lightening will strike and you pick off a surprise NC to become a local legend? Without the constant pressure of "what did you do for us lately, asshole?".

I'd rather be at the "super blue blood." I want the expectations because those expectations mean that you are probably going to have the talent available to compete for National Championships...which is kind of the point.

Besides, if you are a good enough coach to get a job at one of those "super blue blood" schools, you will always be able to find a "good school" job.

The HC at Texas can't go out in Austin and not be pestered. Has nothing to do with the size of town. Texas football is the biggest thing in Texas. SC football is the 39th biggest deal in LA. Maybe not even that high

The advantage of going to a blue blood is even if you suck, you will get a job. Mid-Major will hire you, maybe even a lower P5 school, like South Carolina (couldnt resist, Muschamp says hello). Suck at lower p5 or mid-major and you are RB coach on your next stop

1. USC: Greatest built in recruiting advantage of any NCAA school. Bozo the clown can land top10 classes at USC.

2. Bama: JUCO academics that can be exploited to bring in a roster of NFL level talent bumpkins. Fanbase that blindly supports the program no matter how dirty it's run.

3. Ohio State: Facilities, Budget, best regional recruiting advantage of any big10 school.

4. ND: Backing of the Catholic Church and millions of Catholics. Tradition. Top tier recruiting advantages. Massive AD budget from all the NBC money.

5. Texas: Insane AD budget. Massive recruiting advantage. Army of wealthy boosters. Ground zero in a state that treats football as a religion.
But the boosters also have more power than probably any other major program and creates a lot of extra politcal crap the coach staff has to deal with.

Yes and no. There are definite advantages to being considered the premiere football school in an area that is a hotbed of talent like Southern California. The climate also helps USC recruit nationally.

However, it's not as simple as just picking up the phone and offering as some have suggested. I also find it funny that some of the same folks (not saying you) who talk about the recruiting advantages also say it's in a crappy, unsafe part of LA which would seem to be a disadvantage.

A dog with a note in his mouth could recruit to Southern Cal. Yes, USC is that strong, prestigious and academically excellent. Even if you weren't in a hotbed of talent you guys would be a force to be reckoned with in recruiting. But sitting right there in California? You are in a great situation.

It better be one helluva charming dog. Like way more charming than Lassie.

I'm not one that says USC doesn't have built in recruiting advantages. However, statements like "A dog with a note in his mouth could recruit to Southern California" or "Bozo the clown could recruit a top 10 class at USC" come off as folks who are trying to take credit away from the coaching staff/make excuses for their programs losing to USC.

As other have pointed out, players that are being recruited by USC, are also being recruited by other high profile programs, not to mention virtually every non high profile program. So, while there is no question that USC does have some definite advantages, it's really not as easy as some like to claim.

Ivy League academic requirements that aren't bent much for athletic recruits to be accepted means you have work extremely hard to land the classes to compete against the schools that are glorified trade schools and will easily accept 4-5* recruits who are functionally retarded.

I meant it as a compliment. Sure, your coaches work hard but it's a snap recruiting at USC compared to recruiting at a hundred other schools around the country. We have an advantage too because every kid in America knows who Oklahoma is. But the difference is you're sitting smack dab in the middle of a lot of the best talent in the country and that is a huge advantage. We respect that; we don't begrudge you for it.

I think this is exactly why Patterson has turned down many offers from the biggies. And rumor has it, he's making damned near blue blood type money. North of $4 million and some very lucrative stock non compensation based goodies from donors that never run through the system. Same for assistants. I graduated from HS with Sonny Cumbie's dad...he makes a lot more than what people think as an assistant.

Winner winner. TCU is actually the #1 job on this list. Patterson is secretly the highest paid coach in college and the NFL if you include the percentage of ownership he was given into a corporation owned by some wealthy AF TCU alumni. Apparently he makes an additional $17M-$20M a year from what I have heard from some wealthy TCU boosters.

Not sure who you heard that from. My pops is an alum and my sister is an academic advisor in the athletic department. I have met GP several times and even had the pleasure of having dinner with him and his wife about a month after the Rose Bowl victory against Wiscy. Very cool, down to earth guy. Now regarding the politics and other stuff, you are spot on. He definitely has all control. The alumni kiss his ass; he doesn't have to kiss their ass. GP could not coach at Texas, I could tell you that.
