Thats part of it. Wasting source material, acting talent, not really ever justifying its need to exist as a movie, not even trying to even be remotely plausible. Just a bunch of set pieces and apocalypse pron but without all of the things that make the apocalypse compelling.

Its the zombie movie equivalent of The Whole Ten Yards or Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

See, I read the book, and thought IT sucked donkey balls. If I want short stories, I'll read short stories. Don't dress up a bunch as a NOVEL.

So when I saw the movie, I didn't care that they didn't stay true to the book, because how would you do that? It was essentially 10 short stories.

It had some big SOD moments sure, but most blockbuster movies do these days.

If I had to put someone on an over-rated list, it would probably be Johnny Depp. He's chewing up scenery and just doing improvisational riffs on his 'persona' and getting paid A list money for it.
QUOTE]

I thought Robin Williams fit this bill, but to a lesser degree.

I guess in terms of expectations not being met? Because I can list 100 films that are waaaaaay worse in that time frame.

The list starts with every Adam Sandler movie except the one where Bob beats his ass.
The fuckin guy grew up in New Hampshire and is a Jets fan. Whata fuckin asshole.

Was Rock ever in discussion for the role, or was this Cruises baby from day 1?
Rock does movies that are entertaining enough and I can let my kids watch. He's ok.

Again, stupid movies that you should not expect much going in and he nails it.

He wrote, directed, cast, produced, funded and starred in Rocky,
He gets a pass for that.
Are we grazing over all the shitty Rocky movies he made? And the fact that Rocky was stolen from a man's life story?

Mark Ruffalo has been in a lot of good movies and had some really good parts but...meh.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Meh
Hayden Panettierre sucked in Heroes.

I just watched Zodiac last night. Ruffalo's performance was great.

I've heard disputes between it being based on Ali and Chuck Wepner .

Even so, the movie is "based",it doesn't claim to be about either, and anyone else could have ponied up the dough and made the movie.

Stallone took a huge gamble, and it paid off.

I remember No Way Out.. :) So you're not alone. Not a bad film at all.

I think Cruise had some bad years but made a comeback sort of with Jerry Maguire and Mission Impossible.

And now he's been in a lot of solid stuff.

Edge of Darkness
Minority Report
A Few Good Men.
I even liked War of the Worlds and Oblivion.

Gibson and Costner struck lightning with Braveheart and Dances with Wolves in terms of directors oscars (both deserved imo) Cruise will likely never get one of those.

Yeah that's one thing I like about Cruise is he will do new sci-fi. Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien, Marvel/DC, etc you know the story and characters, but he's one of the few who will go out and try something that's it's own new story (Minority Report, Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow).

Exactly. It wouldn't be an issue for most, but the fact that he's huge is an integral part of the character. Then they went and cast a garden gnome to play him.

I actually liked that change from the books in that respect. I get that they could have gotten a guy who fit the physical side a lot better (love the books, all but the one in Colorado), but would have missed completely on the rest of the character. I think Cruise did a great job of fitting Jack Reacher's personality that the writer made though which to me was the most important aspect.

The Rock would have been great for the size of the character, but I've watched him try to add more than over the top action/cheesy funny lines in things like Snitch and don't see him bringing more to the character than size/humor. Maybe someone like Sean Bean, Ron Pearlman, or Russell Crowe could have fit the size a little better... But to be honest, if you want to put the character on the screen you need Johnson or Cena types and I'd rather have the character than the size right.

Just my thoughts.

Keanu Reeves is the worst actor I've ever seen in my life. With the exception of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (!), he has ruined every movie he's been in due to his horrific acting skills.

Sandra Bullock is really bad too. She has improved over the years, I will give her that, but her early stuff was hard to watch.
Sandra Bullock used to be a dude, so she's eligible for both categories.

Nik Cage is really awful to me. Watched Wild at Heart a little while back and afterward wondered how he ever even got a chance to be Cam Poe.

I don't the idea of the Rock for the character at all. He'd turn it into a farce. I don't specifically have an actor I would have preferred, other than just not one who can fit into my pocket. He doesn't necessarily have to be huge, just not someone who could do a live-action Smurfs movie without CGI.

Has Nicholas Cage been brought up yet.
He sucks big ones.

Nicolas Cage was outstanding in Leaving Las Vegas. A gruesome movie but he deserved the Oscar.

He was pretty good in National Treasure too. He had some decent movies early which I can't remember but most of his do suck big, big ones.

Yeah that fight I heard was inspiration, but Wepner was a New York fighter, former marine, who tripped Ali by stepping on his shoes and got thoroughly beat down in that fight. A really really really thin connection. Could say he "inspired" Rocky, but not like their stories were anything similar.

As for Stallone he did take a massive gamble. I remember reading that he was offered something like 10 mil for the script. When he said he wanted to be Rocky, they told him 1 mil. Really great writing and acting in that. You really thought that's who he was. First Rambo was pretty solid too.

Talking about guilty pleasures... I did used to like Oscar and Demolition Man.

Yes...I think he's from Ball Ground, but is further up now.

Ball Ground was the sticks about 15 yrs ago, but I live northeast of ATL about 45 mi...Ball Ground is northwest of ATL about 50 mi

Ball Ground is still a 1 stop light town of less than 1500 people, and is the start of the Appalachian Mountains, Put it this way, a Dollar General and a Subway are the only chain stores/restaurants that are in the town, and it's largely surrounded by WMA's.

I never lived in the town, I grew up about 3 miles outside of the city limits. I've never lived inside any city limits.
