The Revenant is a long endurance movie. The story takes its time to unfold and the focus is more on the cinematography and set pieces and the performances from the two leads. If you go into this expecting a compelling story or great dialogue this probably isn't the movie for you.

You should definitely check it out yourself and develop your own opinion on the film.

I disagree with the idea that is a long endurance movie. It opens with a pretty stunning action scene and has at least five over the course of the movie. Of course, it is a long movie but the pacing isn't particularly slow...it's just that there is a lot going on.

I thought The Revenant was solid but fairly unsubstantial and falls victim to one of my greatest movie pet peeves (which I won't spoil). I've seen four of the eight nominees (Fury Road, The Martian, Bridge of Spies, and The Revenant). I didn't hate any of them, but none of them were truly sensational films. I plan on seeing The Big Short some time over the long weekend. I would absolutely love to see Room but don't think I can see it anywhere where I live. Have no interest in seeing Spotlight or Brooklyn, as I've heard bad things from the people who saw them and both seem like sanctimonious lefty films.

Best supporting actor will be a race between Hardy, Bale, and Stallone

In my opinion Bale and Hardy deliver the best performances. Bale nails Michael Burry's subtle Asperger symptoms and his glass eye (without using prosthetic) perfectly. Hardy's Fitzgerald is going to fly under the radar because of all the hype for Leo's performance, but he arguably outshines Leo in the film.

The Rocky fan in me will be happy to see Stallone get one though. I think he has a good chance to get it as a career/life time achievement. Creed was a hell of a movie but Michael B Jordan's performance is the one worth talking about.

If Stallone wasn't Stallone with his legendary status as Rocky I don't think he gets nominated.

Mark Rylance was pretty good in Bridge of Spies. I highly doubt he wins though. Haven't seen Ruffalo in Spotlight.

Steve Carrell should have got the nom for Big Short, but that would probably only get in the way of Bale winning.

I haven't seen Bridge of Spies but everyone has Rylance as the clear front runner(I'm not even familiar with him lol).

I think Bale has no shot. Stallone did get the globe but that was a honorary thing I think. Hardy got the very deserving surprise nom so maybe the academy loves him. I hope so.

I'm going in order of likelihood with Rylance, Stallone/Hardy, Ruffalo then Bale.

+1 for a Steve Carell nomination. I was surprised that Bale got the nomination and he didn't.

The Big Short has one of the best scripts of the year. Snappy dialogue and good performances all around from all the big names (Bale, Gosling, Pitt, Carrell).

If you're a fan of any of the actors in the film you'll definitely enjoy it.

I don't get how Charlize Theron doesn't get nominated for Mad Max. The film is nominated for like everything else yet you leave out the star of the film? I don't care if techincally Max is the main character, if you saw the movie, you damn well know who should get the award (the guitar guy...jk).

Friends of mine who have seen The Revenant really didn't care for it at all. I have yet to hear a good comment about it other than Leo's performance. One friend, who goes to at least one movie per week, ranked it a 2 on a 10 point scale. He said that the theater was packed but every comment that he heard from the other moviegoers as he was walking out was negative.

I guess that word hasn't gotten around because it's still doing good box office. It isn't a 10 but it isn't a 2 either... closer to a 10 than a 2 though imo.

I was not a huge fan of the movie, but I would still give it a 6.5 or 7. The acting and cinematography alone makes it worth seeing.

It was the one I enjoyed the most of the nominees I've seen... easily in fact. The Martian, H8 and The Revenant being the others, all of which I enjoyed to varying degree.

Does anyone even watch the Oscars anymore? The nominations are usually for pictures most folks don't even see. I won't waste my time watching these self absorbed people patting themselves on the back and acting like a bunch of spoiled children.

I just saw 13 hours and thought it was the best movie I've seen in quite awhile. the performances were riveting and the production was topnotch. A must see movie in my humble opinion. It was released too late for an Oscar nomination but probably wouldn't get one because of the political nature of the nominating committee.

Exactly why they probably did not bother trying to qualify.

H8 wasnt nominated...

Right. I just threw that in there because there's been so much talk about it and it did receive a few nominations in minor categories. I included any movie that was nominated for anything that I've seen... just those 4.

Several of the nominated flicks have been popular and done decent to very good box office, so far... The Martian, Mad Max & The Revenant, for instance. There are very few nominees that are obscure... Brooklyn & Room maybe. Standards for quality are subjective of course, but I think actual directors are better able to discern excellence in directing than I am, for instance... actors for acting, etc.
It's not a mass popularity contest. There are The People Choice Awards for that.

13 Hours is a typical throw away January film that will be forgotten once actual good films come out in 2016. That's why it's not nominated for an Oscar.

You don't watch movies like Mad Max, The Martian, Creed, The Revenant, Hateful Eight, Sicario?

Even movies that are less geared for the general audience like The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Steve Jobs, Ex Machina, etc. were all really good films.

If your idea of a great movie is a Michael Bay film then yes the Oscars isn't for you.

It may or may not be a mass popularity contest, but don't pretend that the Oscar voters are voting for the best in each category. This may be the most political of all award shows, emphasizing the personal politics of the voters and Hollywood's perception of what political correctness should be.
