Oscars are kinda a joke but the official nominations have been released.

Any surprises? The Revenant and Mad Max lead the way in noms.

The black/white controversy won't fade with Compton and Elba(wtf) being passed over.

Surprised but pleased that Hardy snuck in with his nom.

I think Best Actor and Actress are the only real locks.

I am surprised Hardy was not nominated for Best Actor (I havent seen Legend, but I heard he was amazing), but was pleased he was nominated for Supporting Actor. He really was good in Revenant..

My main surprise was that Hateful 8 was not nominated for Best Picture. And they only went with 8 noms (they are allowed 10, IIRC). Not giving it a nom is almost an insult.

Jennifer Jason Leigh with a nom from H8 was surprising. I actually thought that of all the cast, her work was the least impressive. I guess a woman who continually get the shit beat out of her gets some attention from the Academy...

Who is your actress lock ? I've only seen The Revenant, The Martian, The Big Short & The Hateful Eight of the nominated flicks. I assume Leo is the actor lock ?

I assume you are referring to DiCaprio and Lawrence as the locks?

I thought Joy was such a blah movie that I simply cannot understand it getting ANY accolades. Why would she get Oscar love for that work?

I have no prob with Leo winning, but Cumberbatch has been getting praise for Jobs. Not sure I would rate either as a "lock".

Hateful 8 is the worst reviewed QT movie I know of

Larson appears to be the runaway favorite for actress. The SAG awards will be the confirmation. If her and Leo both win those as well it's done deal.

@calsnowskier. I know you mentioned Legend earlier in another thread and while haven't seen the movie I've followed predictions of the noms and the noms for smaller awards(globes/SAG etc..). And he was never even factored, I think the movie did too poor.

I know you loved H8 but that wasn't much of a factor whenever I looked either. It was just solid Tarantino to most. Really wish supporting actor was so stacked though. Goggins deserves recognition on the big screen scale.

I agree re: Legend. I just don't get why Hardy is docked for a bad movie in Legend, but Lawrence is not docked for a bad movie in Joy.

I understand H8 not winning. While I liked it better than Rev, Rev is more of an Oscar-type movie. I expect Rev to win. But I think H8 was completely engrossing and almost entirely driven by dialogue.

Dogs is my favorite QT movie, and H8 is a LOT like Dogs. My view is likely biased.

Yeah again I haven't see Legend but Ive heard its pretty terrible and that Hardy basically saves it(though that could be a good argument for Tom). I just don't think there was room. Even Depp didnt get a nom as his buzz died down and that movie was far better received.

Leo, Fassenbender(not cumberbatch lol), Damon, Cranston and Redmayne were all very well recieved too. Although both Cranston and Redmayne were in movies that were very mixed reviewed as well but the roles were more oscar bait so they still got nods.

I think Leo has it in the bag but I see Damon(his movie is the only one still getting buzz) and Cranston as the challengers. It always seemed like Fassenbender was the threat but that movie has basically gone dark since the box office bust.

Sorry, I always get Fassbender and Cumberbatch mixed up. I posted from my phone, so did not confirm before posting.

Also, good call on Goggins. He really did shine in H8. I think he is a star on the rise.

A bit of a more serious, better looking Buscemi.

Naw, death proof was a bonified flop. I liked it though. And H8 isn't his best, but it's still a really good movie.

Beasts of no nation was snubbed on several fronts. The worst being Abraham Attah, the boy in the movie. The acadamy loves to give nominations to young girls, but for some reason ignore boys. Attahs transformation from a lovable, bright and playful kid to a stoned cold killer should have not only brought a nod, he should be one of the front runners.

Star Wars didn't even get nominated for best picture despite blowing away the competition. The Oscars are just a circle jerk love-in for the keesh and croissant crowd and not the movie goers.

Best actor is going to be Leonardo Dicaprio vs Michael Fassbender with Eddie Redmayne being a dark horse.

I was intrigued to see Damon in there over Tom Hanks in Bridge of Spies. He brought a sense of charm and likability to his character, Mark Whatney, that made The Martian enjoyable from beginning to end.

This is by far Leo's grittiest performance and most committed role he has ever played. His performances in The Aviator and Gilbert Grape is arguably better, but he is due for one and I think he gets it this year.

Fassbender is also very deserving

Buzz has completely died for Fassbender. He was a favorite. But now I think Damon and Cranston are much higher.

Jobs is such a tired roll and not nearly as challenging as some of the others. Leo turned it down in favor of Revenantz

It will be interesting to see who wins Supporting Actor. Stallone is getting a lot of love for Creed, but it seems like Academy voters tend to cast their votes for who they think is best for their look. Based on the old adage of "it's an honor just to be nominated," voters might believe the nomination is enough of a tribute for him.

Friends of mine who have seen The Revenant really didn't care for it at all. I have yet to hear a good comment about it other than Leo's performance. One friend, who goes to at least one movie per week, ranked it a 2 on a 10 point scale. He said that the theater was packed but every comment that he heard from the other moviegoers as he was walking out was negative.

I think the one definitive lock is best director.

Alejandro Inarritu will take his second Oscar in a row.

Wish George Miller had released Mad Max in a different year, because he delivered one of the best action films of the decade! The cinematography, the colorful post apocalyptic world (rather than the usual grey and bleak look), and the emphasis on using real stunts and set pieces won me over.

But then when I saw The Revenant and the cinematography that Inarritu pulled off for that film and I was blown away.

In my opinion he joins the ranks of Nolan, Tarantino, Fincher, PT Anderson, and Scorsese as IT directors in the business. Very intrigued to see what kind of project he takes on next after entering the scene with Birdman and The Revenant.

Best supporting actor will be a race between Hardy, Bale, and Stallone

In my opinion Bale and Hardy deliver the best performances. Bale nails Michael Burry's subtle Asperger symptoms and his glass eye (without using prosthetic) perfectly. Hardy's Fitzgerald is going to fly under the radar because of all the hype for Leo's performance, but he arguably outshines Leo in the film.

The Rocky fan in me will be happy to see Stallone get one though. I think he has a good chance to get it as a career/life time achievement. Creed was a hell of a movie but Michael B Jordan's performance is the one worth talking about.

If Stallone wasn't Stallone with his legendary status as Rocky I don't think he gets nominated.

Mark Rylance was pretty good in Bridge of Spies. I highly doubt he wins though. Haven't seen Ruffalo in Spotlight.

Steve Carrell should have got the nom for Big Short, but that would probably only get in the way of Bale winning.

The Revenant is a long endurance movie. The story takes its time to unfold and the focus is more on the cinematography and set pieces and the performances from the two leads. If you go into this expecting a compelling story or great dialogue this probably isn't the movie for you.

You should definitely check it out yourself and develop your own opinion on the film.
