In 1989 my family did a Canada car trip. Entered the country at Niagara Falls and drove through Toronto, stopping to eat and see the Skydome. After that we spent a week outside Ottawa than went to Montreal for a day. So Toronto, I didn't see that much of it. Ottawa, I spent all of my time in the suburbs. Montreal, we spent the day being tourist.

The only other time I have been to Canada, I got thrown in the clink at the border station by Detroit.

FWIW, Toronto is a very, very different city today than it was in 1989. I know pretty much every city is, but everything about the place has changed. I had an uncle who moved back to the old country around that time and didn't visit again until 2 years ago and he was stunned at what he saw.

I defer to Kelly Johnson, who played for all 5 AL East teams, who said Toronto had "the best food and the worst traffic" of the five cities. Sums it up nice.

OK. The suburbs of Ottawa are very meh. The downtown area is nice and the canal is cool and all but the suburbs? Not my Cup o' tea. Of course that's how I feel about every Canadian city, so...

Coming as a teenager from the beaches of Virginia, the area outside of Ottawa was beautiful. As a jaded middle-aged man who now lives outside Detroit, I probably wouldn't care much for it.

You went to Harvard, didn't you Kenny? Or at least an Ivy League school?

The University of Phoenix is Ivy League, right?

I kid, I kid. I went to Brown.

I was only in Montreal for a few days and thought it was really cool. I was only briefly in Halifax and St. Johns but liked what I saw. I would have enjoyed St. Johns more if I didn't have to keep looking over my shoulder and keep my hand on my wallet since Juliansteed lives there.

This is so true. Growing up in Buffalo we used to be in Toronto from time to time and one thing you always knew was that you stayed away from Queens and Yonge.

Hadn't been there in a while until a couple years back when I started going up frequently for work and realized how much different that area has become. Yonge north of the Eaton Centre can still be a bit of an adventure after dark, but not at all like it used to be when I was a kid.

That gap between Dundas and Bloor definitely gets shady at night still, but there's a hell of a lot of new development happening around Gerrard St. that should put an end to that in the next 5 years.

Like some people miss shady Times Square, I sometimes miss old hooker-and-drug-filled Yonge St. There was always something funny happening.

I was born in Halifax. To hear my folks talk about it, it was basically a real-life version of the Trailer Park Boys.

People have completely forgotten just how bad they were before Jimmy D took over as GM in the early 80's. What an AMAZING run they've had.

Some people haven't. I watched Henri kick the puck in the net in game 6 of the finals to win the cup that year. All downhill after that. From Darkness with Harkness, treating Gordie like shit, to aggressive hockey is back, (Lindsay & Kromm) to having 4 seats 3rd row upper bowl the 2nd & 3rd yr. of the Illitch era. (FYI that was $32- per game for all 4) 20 plus years of mostly unremitting pain. I can't forget that pain ever. I hope I'm dead before they get even close to being that bad again.

I do agree...the past 20+ yrs have been amazing. :suds:

Man, don't jinx it.

Can you jinx a jinx?

And how can the Wings fail? They have FASTEST SKATER EVAR DYLAN LARKIN!

You know what will happen? They miss, win the lottery and have Mathews to help fill that new building the destitute of Michigan are paying for on behalf of the billionaire baron of shitty pizza.

YOUNG CROSBY has 1 pt in his past 12 games.

Also, I will cry if that happens. Like real cry.

The Wings have done this every year under Zetterberg's captaincy. They don't play with any kind of passion or urgency until their backs are squeezed tight against the wall. When they get a buffer, they squander it until their backs are against the wall again. They've been fortunate to this point to squeeze just enough fight at the end of each season to make the playoffs.

There's enough talent on the roster to do it again, but at this point my confidence is pretty shaken that they will.
