I know that everybody knows it but there needs to be a thread dedicated to how awful he is. He's a fucking lucky ass and eventually this is going to bite us in the ass more than it already has.

I get the frustration. He's obnoxious and clearly has some luck on his side. But he has 62 saves out of 67 opportunities as a Mariner. Better to be lucky than good I suppose...

I won't argue with the luck vs. good but the luck is going to run out. At some point in a big game we're going to need someone to hand the ball to that can handle a one run game and he's obviously not it. He doesn't have it anymore. Closer by committee is better than going with him.

Yeah, I get it. He's got the job done though, and because of that, as frustrating as it's been at times and as concerning as the potential disaster is, we shouldn't expect that he loses the job any time soon.

I don't want to come off like a big Rodney supporter though, so in the mean time he can shove his imaginary arrows up his ass...

I used a similar argument to defend Rodney. Last year, sure he pitched well. He had a 2.85 ERA last year, so his save rate was justified, but with an ERA of 7, that's going to catch up to him.

There is a reason why Rodney is on his 4th team and it isn't because his arm is bad. It is because there just isn't enough tums in any one city to keep him around for too long.

I'm not even really disagreeing with you. Lloyd should stick with him until his poor play starts losing us games. I'm a big "the W-L numbers are how good you are" but you can't ignore a 1.78 WHIP and a 7+ ERA. That's pure luck. He sucks and he's going to get exposed.

I think everyone is frustrated with Rodney's penchant for making games too interesting and I get the arguments for and against keeping him in the closer role. My question is this: Who do you replace him with if you decide to remove him from the role? Being a closer isn't something any reliever can do and do well and if you pick the wrong guy, you've messed with everyone's bullpen routine only to probably end up putting Rodney back in that role at some point. It's not an easy thing to do.

Its ugly and hard to watch but in the end the guy gets the save just about every time. Until he starts to blow a ton of saves and loses games he's perfectly safe in his role.

Its damn sloppy but it works somehow.

He's still closing games at a good rate, but I think people's main problem is; with his ERA as high as it is, that's not going to last long and people want to see him yanked before he actually starts losing us games.

Great example of why the saves stat is overrated...

Not really. It's reasonable to be concerned because of his high ERA, but at the end of the day his saves and blown saves are the only stats that matter.

So then we should be able to get high value for him in a trade since he is #5 in save opportunities this season?

I doubt a team would look at those saves as high value... Quality Saves would be a better stat imo...

Not according to the skipper.... Rodney is staying put, and has saved a lot of games... Who cares if he's throwing meat-balls now .... He's done well in the past so he's staying put...
