Ya I thought of Cueto in the off season as a trade possibility. You are right that now seems like a time to call them up and see what the price would be.

Good call.

I, like others, don't believe this team as it stands looks like a W.S. playing team. We might as well look ahead on what could possibly help us because I believe most believe that Quentin won't be the difference maker (though he may help). So these are are early suggestions, but reality should be used.

Get: Hamels and Utley (needs to approve any deal)

Trade: Elias and Peterson.

Why?: It would be a risky overpay based on potential, but we get two proven vets that would bring leadership and talent at two needed positions (SP and 1B).

Negatives: Salary. Loss of Peterson (who I am less sold on as I was last year at this point).

Not sure if I'd do this deal.

Hamels and Utley have a total of $38.5m on their contracts combined.

The Mariners are currently sitting on a payroll of $123m. Assuming they're willing to add another $38.5m on to their payroll (really, really, really doubt it), that would put us at $161m payroll. If we are going to add another $38.5m in payroll, I'd prefer it being something other than Cole Hamels and Chase Utley.

Utley is 36 years old, injury prone, way past his prime and not worth the salary he is currently making.

Hamels I'm not as opposed to. He's overpaid, but not drastically and is still a very productive player.

I like your thinking of upgrading 1B though. Logan Morrison is struggling right now, and this is something he has done plenty of times in the past.

I said this offseason that I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being replaced during some point this season. Right now that is looking more and more likely, and more and more necessary as he is arguably the least productive starter on this team. At least when Zunino is hitting .149, he does it while being one of the best pitch framing catchers in baseball, and he has youth as an excuse.

You can't add players of need at this point in the season unless you are prepared to take on contracts. Not sure why money is a factor since it is a multibillion dollar company paying the tab. If you want to wait for next year to spend on better talent for the money than fine, but that is not what this thread is about. It is about trying to win it this year because clock is a ticking on Felix and Cano.

I'm just being realistic, this ownership is not willing to take a loss. If they bump payroll up to $160-$170m they'd be taking a loss.

I'd add Cruz to that list of players whose clock is ticking. He has been phenomenal so far, despite being 35.

I truly understand your statement, but Geoff Baker has proved that to be a myth for years. Better play, more attendance. Not to mention this franchise has gained over a half a billion dollars in value since buying it. No chance for a loss. Angles do it at that payroll and they fight with the Dodgers market. Winning is profitable.

I 100% agree with you, I'm just stating the fact that our ownership has shown a clear lack of willingness to spend beyond a certain threshold and I don't see that they are going to suddenly reverse that trend.

I almost added him. Good call.

As far as click ticking goes, he's the biggest one IMO. Robinson Cano's power looks to have diminished, but I expect he can play at this level well into his mid 30s and Felix could go for a while too, just depends on how well his body can handle the load he has put on his arm over the past 10 years.

Robbie and Felix I'd say will be at the top of their game for another 4-5 years. Cruz could drop off as soon as next year.

Another Brewers Offer:

Gomez
Garza
Lucroy
Brewers pay $10M of the $23M

For

Zunino
Peterson
Pries
Medina

Why? Because I can't watch K-Nino bat anymore.

I notice there are many in the Mariners camp with their fingers hovering above the "panic" button. The Mariners have a good team on paper and it's safe to say the team is underachieving. Tiajuan Walker is on the hill tonight and so far, walks have been killing him. He and James Paxton need to take a step back and believe in the stuff they have, because they have good stuff. Hopefully when Iwakuma comes back, he'll be back to his old self. As much as I hate the saying, "It's only April," that statement means it's still early in the season.

We have been saying, "It's only April" for over a decade now and for about 33 out of 38 years so the saying means very little for this 38 year M's fan...but thanks for trying to cheer us up.

I like the idea of Lucroy, simply because he's one of the few Brewers hitters who actually have an identical home/away split.
