This is not about the Morgan Freeman movie.

th
Timeline
While still in preseason, Wil (who essentially created the league and proposed/inaugurated all of the MBBRL rules) added the “spice” of abandoning the bottom 2 “B” league teams into Oblivion on his August 18th, 2014 post. Wil also posted this on the “B” league thread.

At the time, not too many commented about the mention of “oblivion” other than brief notations from both Bandit and Barilko within 24 hours of Wil’s posting.

When the push came for someone to take over an abandon “B” team in early October, the subject of oblivion was raised on the MBBRL "B" Team opening, inquire within thread, specifically on page 3.

Microwahevo posed this question/comment October 3 on that thread:

I have a question about "being thrown into oblivion". While that sounds great and all, why do we throw anyone into oblivion? I understand that two(or 4) move down from A and vice versa for B, but why do we need to replace anyone from B if they finish last and 2nd to last?

It seems A has a really tight locked core and B seems to be generating one as well. This seems like it could be a league full of guys for years on end. Why ruin that? What if a really good owner simply caught the injury bug one year? Or his team simply failed to meet expectations? Should that owner be kicked out even though he remains a solid owner?

I'm just trying to get a better understanding of why this "oblivion tossing" would have to take place. Help?

Harold Seattle, TKO, and Chef agreed with Micro’s thoughts. In fact, TKO added the paradoxical retort:
“If the goal is to "expand" and have spots available every year for newcomers, I think the chance at hitting more SFNL's increases.”
Treff politely asked all to shelf the topic since the issue at that time was finding a replacement owner. So we did.

Unmatched Level of the MBBRL
I respect all of this, particularly the effort that Wil had put forth in establishing the MBBRL. Without his efforts, the league would not have been as enjoyable or competitive. I also appreciate the level of enthusiasm by all of the MBBRL members. I’m sure that we have all experienced what happens in other leagues when the interest of an owner or two begins to wane. And Treff has filled in as co-commish outstandingly.

Oblivion - The Discussion
My view is to seriously discuss this topic of oblivion while the season is still playing out. In part because no one has yet been jettisoned to oblivion yet, so we can all have a non-bias conversation about it.

I’d also like to add that I agree with Micro and TKO’s opinions.

I'm most interested to hear from Will on this one. Not only does the idea come from him, but he's much more eloquent at voicing his reasonings.

My view of it. . And hopefully I can word it intelligently:
"Oblivion" is basically a fancy word to say the final two spots won't be an automatic next season. No one is being "banished", rather the bottom two teams simply don't have the assurances the other 10 do. No one had ever suggested that whomever it is can't return in 2015, just that it wouldn't be a guarantee.

As to TKO point, I'm not sure the point was ever "expansion". When the idea was generated, it wasn't in response to possibly adding new owners it was more of a "hey the A league has relegation.. either 2 or 4 teams, what does the B have to keep those last four, maybe five teams competing outside of pride? "

I'm by no means married to the concept, but I do agree with and think it's a good thing to keep as many as possible involved, both during the season and from year to year

I think the best thing we can do is make a "C" league... And i vote that the C league would only be 6-8 teams big... It would act as a fun mini league, that will challenge all in it to be ACTIVE owners... and that is afterall what we are looking for in the MBBRL family...

Highly doubtful. Any additional league will be bound by the same rules as the first. .. scoring, roster, and number of owners. And IMHO, a third league does little more than water down what we've been doing

I would only go the C league route if there is a ton of interest from plenty of newcomers who would want it but I def agree with Micro.

Well, not so sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but let's remember that besides the first year (obviously) we have had guys drop out and leave their "spaces" (that golf guy, dog of creepy avi and some others I can't remember right off the bat.......wait, naughtymax?). Anywho, had they not dropped out there are a few of us who would have dropped into the B league but were saved by those who left...............me included. I cannot imagine my life being worth living if not for the 2 MBBRL Leagues I play in (ok, so that's a bit dramaquennish) but you guys get the point. Seems like we all have a tough decision though as I also hate to see the leagues diluted by folks who do not have the passion for this silly assed spobby (yes, I just made that up) as we do..............so in short, I honestly don't know what we should do.

That was my first thought but then we have to find 12 more guys that give a shit and IMO that's just not gonna happen.

So here's a stupid idea.................so stupid I almost shouldn't post it but let's just have me post it and take the flamming rather than have somebody else post it and have it turn into a cyberbrawl.............what if, and just if, we paid, say $10 a piece; you only lose $10 buck you have a shot at $120? I know it's stupid so shoot it down.

Exactly. .As we found out in rounding out the B league this year. . We can find about 14 to fill 12.. and we made an oops on that. . Then we had 2-3 to fill one, looks like that was a better choice. But a whole 12 more? Just how dedicated will numbers 10, 11, & 12 be? Not a headache I'm looking forward to in the slightest.

We want to keep the competitive nature of MBBRL. I would think that scrapping the Oblivion punishment would be appropriate. The reasons for oblivion should be inactivity, poor behavior, etc. not one year's poor performance. Will's concept of putting together a group of guys who like to post and play has worked great to this point, but I am afraid that our pool of qualified participants is narrow and we don't want to toss out guys that are really interested and trying. I think that it is natural to assume we will have a little attrition each year anyway which would allow new blood.
that my 2 cents

Ok, seriously...I was concerned about the "oblivion" deal until Treff explained that there would still be a chance of being invited back if the others thought it was deserved. I am fine with that. The only other concern I have about this would be what TKO touched on...having to find another replacement owner due to turnover.

I sm 1-5, could be 1-11, and make no mistake, I would be as active as I was at 1-1. And I would expect nothing less from any MBBRL member. After all, isn't that the core of it all?

I love Fuzzy's post, but it also makes me wonder if it really is a punishment per se? I can't think of any owner in this league that I would not vote to bring back. And that brings up another question: who decides in the end? Is it a vote, or is it Treff's call?

This MBBRL league (and even the baseball one) has already been more important to me than a redraft league full of Lions fans I do every year. I love the competitiveness of it. Not saying the Lions one isn't, but here's just something about the MBBRL that makes me want to win over that league, and others, except my money leagues.
