Does Heatley have anything at all left in the tank? Somebody has to be willing to give him a Havletesque deal right? Has to be a team with a stable locker room and a team that won't rely on him too much. Would a team like Pittsburgh be able to use him?

It used to be that you could go 10% over the cap in the off-season, but had to be under the cap when the season began. Maybe that changed in the new CBA? I have no idea.

Chicago is already a couple mill over , it's gonna be interesting to see how they handle that , plus the 2 imminent ridiculous contracts, and somehow not slide away from the elite status.

This is still the case - you can be over the cap in the offseason but as long as you get below it on day 1 you are fine

That's how i understood it , but For McCowan to talk about a 5 year average yesterday , my interest is peaked. We know how much GM's like to charge forth today and tomorrow be damned. Imagine multiple scenarios where upper level teams mortgage themselves later to try and stay on top now.

I heard Bobcat say on the radio yesterday that the teams actually can be over or under the cap as long as over a 5 year period they average to the cap ??? WTF ? Is that true ?

No, no no. He was floating a "rolling" cap as a new idea because the current system sucks because salary caps suck.

For this season only they can probably work out Versteeg or Rosival and then Teravainen going down to get under the cap. Next year I wouldn't doubt the money used on Richards, Rosival or Oduya (this year) goes towards Kane/Toews (next year).

The team that looks to be in cap hell this season is the Flyers and then 10 million tied to Steit/Pronger for 3 years (+35 deals).

I think he could be useful on a third line / second PP unit, but yeah - definitely not someone you'd need to rely on.

For a one year/reasonable money deal I'd take him. I think he has use still. Problem is where he'd fit is not where the Jackets are lacking. I think he'd probably do well with Dubinsky digging pucks out of corners and Atkinson making space. But I don't want him more than Calvert who is already there.

Can't count Pronger. He's on "Injured Reserve" and might come back and totally not retire after five years of not playing. No. Nuh uh. The Flyers are, ummmm... avoiding (no). Missing (no). Detouring (no). CIRCUMVENTION! THAT'S THE WORD!

Nope, the Devils are the only team to have ever accomplished that. Everyone else is on the level and there's nothing suspicious or out of place with any of the other 15 year deals or players not playing counting or not counting against team's cap space.

Oh ! Okay , thanks ! I caught the conversation mid stream , but man oh man did it grab my attention. I pictured a brand new fancy way for the GM's to shit their own beds

What flavor kool-aid did they give you? :suds:

They tried to give me grape, but I faked drinking it.

I think Lou should have forfeited the 30th pick this year and accepted the penalty the Devils rightfully deserved for breaking a rule that wasn't actually a rule and isn't clearly stated anywhere.

Fully agree with forty_three: Heatly has a ton of 'heart', but not much else these days. :(
