I understand the whole Peterson-Dallas connection but with the leagues best back(Murray) already there I don't think Dallas will be his landing spot

Murray is a UFA this offseason. He easily could leave Dallas. He is going to be looking for a HUGE, long term pay day with the season he is having.

The leadership and the image he brings as a role model more than make up for anything they are paying him. Not to mention that he is still the 2nd best LB on this team, and may even pass Barr in tackles before the year is out.

Kinda like they SHOULD have done with Winfield a couple of years ago.

Winfield is a perfect example of overpaying for vet talent.

The Vikes signed him to a ridiculous contract extension at a time when he literally could not have played for 85% of the teams in the league anymoer (he was a zone CB that couldn't play man anymore and there were few pure zone teams left). And sure enough the moment he left, he got cut for a 5th round rookie because he simply didn't have the skills to play CB in the new NFL anymore.

Greenway is not that bad But he is GREATLY overpaid and has been for years now. Keeping him on a contract has stopped us from making other moves.

I'm fine with Greenway coming back as a 3rd LB who doesn't play in the nickel and only makes about $2.5 million next year, but that would mean we would need an upgrade at MLB who also can play in the nickel and those types of LB's these days don't grown on trees. So if we can't find one of those it only leaves the option of upgrading OLB and doing MLB on the cheap, and if that is the case, then Greenway has to go.

If we head into next season with Greenway as our 2nd best LB, it means Spielman didn't do his job during the offseason. We don't have a ton of glaring needs right now especially on the defensive side of the ball so this is the one area where we can continue to improve the team.

Not to mention his price tag. AD is scheduled to make 15 mil next year. Thats TWICE the next highest paid guy (McCoy from Philly) and 2.5 times the 3rd highest (the RB in Seattle, forget his name at 6 mil).

No one is going to trade for that. Aint gonna happen.

What will most likely happen is the Vikings will ask AP to renegotiate his deal. AD will refuse. The Vikings will have no choice but to waive him, and AD will have a star on his helmet next year and probably making about 7 mil. You heard it here first...

I've been saying it since the season began... that the deal was going to be re-negotiated after the season (even before the suspension or whatever you want to call it...), though I never mentioned Dallas as the landing spot. They can't continue to build with his cap hit.

Cap is a myth in the NFL these days. The only thing that matters is cash. The Vikes haven't really been close to the cap ceiling in years now. Most teams in fact are millions and millions below the cap every year now. The cap is flat out higher these days than what most teams are willing to spend.

Restructuring can reduce a cap hit but it would up the amount of cash we would have to pay him next year (with a guy like AP, we would need to extend his contract to restructure....he isn't going to just take a pay cut). So a new deal is actually more constrictive this coming offseason than letting his current deal play out.

If Adrian would have played this season, I could have seen them giving him a 2 or 3 year extension where we spread out his cash into the future at a cheaper rate. But I can't imagine an extension being worked out after all this.

This is one of the most nonsensical Vikings-related rants I've ever read online, and that's saying a lot.

Yeah, I was thinking that Murray was in a contract year. He's not gonna make Murray kind of money, if the Vikes pay him that, I'd be surprised, but maybe.

If not, the Vikes could trade him, he does have value, get picks and pick up a RB like a Ray Rice??

...so you'd cut Peterson after his fiasco, then take on the PR nightmare of Ray Rice? Granted it'd pronably be cheaper, but no way. Either try to renegotiate with AP, or if that doesn't work, focus on beefing up the line (do this anyway, we've had one of the most overrated O-lines in the league for years now) for McKinnon/Assiata, or draft Gordon.

I think the plan all along was to re-work AP's contract or cut him - his current situation just makes it easier now. I'd put focus on the O-line. Our YPC are identical to last year, regardless of who's carrying the rock. We just haven't had any of the big breakaway runs yet... not sure if any of them are capable of giving that.

Look, I love what AP has been able to do. But he's overpaid for his position. He's been rewarded, and this is how we've been paid back. If there's too many hurt feelings, it's just better to let him go. I can't see the Vikes finding a trade partner.

Unless AP is a total assclown, he should be willing to renegotiate his deal after being paid that monster contract to sit out all season. To be honest, I'd be all for drafting Gordon as his heir either way, as it's looking like we'll have too many wins to get that great of a pick anyway. Gordon just may be the around the best value by our pick, and he'd fill a need with or without AP.

I'll shit myself if they use their first round pick on a running back...

NO, not cut him. I should clarify, I would trade AP, but only for the right deal!

I just threw Rice out there, but you're right a media circus would evolve. I do like Melvin Gordon, plus you guys still have Ben Tate, not sure it's in the plans to keep him. Keep McKinnon, great upside, get rid of Asiata.

I still think Kalil will be ok, he hasn't been great, but maybe a move to right guard would help??!! Draft a left tackle??

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I would definitively do ANY of these things and AP is a superstar, but I really like what Zimmer has done without him.

No one is trading anything subsatntial for an RB who will be 30 next season and coming off a child abuse circus year out of football. If AP somehow plays again this year, I'm sure he'll stick around, otherwise they'll either keep him or cut him next year.

Not to mention, if they trade for him, they get his 15 million dollar cap hit. Aint happening. The Vikes are going to have to pay him or cut him. And I cant see them thinking AD is worth 15 mil at this point when runningback by committee is all the rage in the NFL, has worked with the Vikings this year.

They arent going to pay him 15 mil when they could get 3 or more QUALITY O linemen for that same 15 mil.

According to league stats, Chad Greenway has 976 tackles since 2007, which is the MOST IN THE NFL. http://t.co/a2ySyICCrM

I think the "most tackles" stat is underrated by some, and overrated by others. On one hand, it means an LB is getting in on tons of plays to make stops, but by the same token, it can mean an LB is close on passing plays, but still gives up a lot of passes and makes tackles aftsr substantial yardage is gained.

Greenway is a very solid LB and worth keeping, not to mention he's kind of a hometown hero (from Iowa, I think?). He is pretty good against the run, but lackluster in pass coverage. With Anthony Barr looking like the real deal, if they get decent pass protection from the MLB spot, then Greenway is great to have out there. He's a class act, and I truly hope he retires a Viking. I haven't bought a jersey since I was a kid, but if I ever got one current Viking's jersey, it'd have #52 on it.

No, because I knew he was a once in a generation back, there are none of those in the 2015 draft.

Gordon isn't Peterson's crazy combination of speed and power. But he is a DAMN fine RB prospect.

I don't want them to go that route but I can think of a lot worse scenarios......like cutting Peterson and thinking we can do RB on the cheap with McKinnon, Asiata and Tate. That would be a recipe for disaster. This OL has its problems but run blocking isn't one of them. Our run game wont improve with this same RB crew and a different OL from FA pick ups.

He went to school at Iowa and grew up is SD. That SD part is actually bigger than most think because having guys like Greenway on the roster brings in a little more revenue than the Vikes would normally see if he was from a place like say Texas where they might root for Greenway but will still be Dallas fans. It's hard to say how much that adds to the Vikes bottom line but everyone in the Vikes business sections will know that at least moves the needle a little.

That said it isn't even close to the $7 million Greenway is scheduled to make next year. A LB of Greenway's caliber market value is right around $3 million per season at this point in his career. Add in the fact that Greenway has stated he wants to be here and the Vikes should offer him at the very most a $3 million take it or we'll cut you contract for next season.
