Because there's a 12-game season and with a sample size that big, you can properly rank teams?

You do realize that college football is the only major sport where final rankings are dictated by this "head-to-head is everything" fallacy, right? It's not like I am advocating some unknown or untested idea.

still trying to justify that loss to ASU? I get it now. Carry on.

Im just gonna guess you didnt watch the game. Outside of mop up duty oregon was thoroughly fucking curbstomped.. This fallacy some hold on to of ranking teams by comparing only box scores is ignant.

Stanford has beaten ASU, Washington, UCLA and Oregon St, and Oregon.

Oregon has beaten Washington and UCLA.

Tell me who's resume is better?

Oregon beat Washington by 21 in Seattle. Stanford beat them by 4 in Palo Alto.

Oregon beat UCLA by 28. Stanford beat them by 14.

I don't find the 8 point Oregon State win to be that impressive. But you are probably right. The Arizona State and Oregon wins probably push Stanford into having the better resume (but only slightly). I imagine, the more that I think about it, that i'll rank Stanford higher this week. A lot of that is based on the idea that Stanford as genuinely improved. If they struggle or lose @ USC next week, i'll rethink my conclusion.

Smart is just hating on Stanford. He has been all year. He's still red assed at losing in the Rose Bowl to a superior team.

Stanford kicked Oregons ass last night. Oregon needed every break in the last half of the 4th to make it resemble a game. It wasn't.

It was domination by the defending pac champ, defending Rose Bowl champ and seal clubber extraordinaire of Oregon 2 years running.

I'm sure you'll manage to rank Wisconsin in the top 10 too, even though their resume sucks ass.

1.6 losses is good enough for a top 10 spot!

judging from a complete resume, i think i'd give stanford the slightest of nods over oregon, auburn, and a couple others.

Stanford and not close imo. I think they have 8 NFL guys on their defense. Maybe more. It's hard for me to say which ones aren't going to be paid piles of money to play.

When their defensive front is on its A game, it mauls even excellent offenses.

UCF is the best 1 loss team, duh.

Yeah, maybe by a nose. Although Stanfords D just drubbed Oregon and that without a couple of starters.

However their offense isn't anywhere near as good as Stanfords.

Loss v utah or loss v the current #2 team? Thats just the tip of the argument iceburg.
Miami's problem is you don't have a single good win, and you have some barely win games against teams you should have beaten down (Wake and UNC).

Stanford, but they lost to Utah.
Oregon, a bad loss to good team, but very quality wins (UCLA)
Clemson, a bad loss to a good team, a good win over UGa
Mizzou, still have 2 tough games to play ... beating the SEC East this year isn't saying too much.
Auburn, let's see where they are after UGa and Bama ... not a believer they are back yet, but on their way
Miami, see above ... the UF win is the best they have
Okie State, bad loss ... several tough games to go
Michigan State, great D, O not so much. I can see them losing to a team like Baylor 7-0
UCF - not even in the equation, just like Louisville.

Part of the problem is that many of these teams have tough schedules upcoming. But, I would go with Stanrord, Ore, and Clemson. Missouri and Auburn have to make me believers.

Yes. The entire Oregon nation is walking bow legged for weeks after what Stanford did to them tonight. What a massacre of someone claiming they were crystal football worthy.

But, stanford straight up dominated that game. Score not indicative.
I watched the entire game, and I am not buying the score not being indicative. You think that Stanford just decided to let them score 20? It's not like Stanford put second stringers in. We all know Oregon can score a lot of points fast, and that is exactly what they did. Sure, Stanford dominated the game, but Oregon still scored 20 points in about 8 minutes, as they are known to do. If that game went another 10 minutes, I am not confident Stanford wins. Don't get me wrong, games last 60 minutes ... I know that. My point is that the score indicated exactly how close that game was.

Two can play that game ... Stanford needed every break prior to the last half of the 4th to be ahead 26-0.

Everyone is acting like Stanford gave up in the last 8 minutes, or they put in their second team. They didn't and Oregon came damn close to coming back. I watched every second of the game, and there is no doubt Stanford kicked ass all night long. But the game is 60 minutes long and Oregon just about won the last 8 minutes by a margin that almost got them a W. I personally couldn't believe what was happening after the previous 50 some odd minutes.

I think its Stanford, MSU and Clemson in that order. Some people might not be sold on the Spartans but any team that plays that kind of defense can beat anybody on a given night.
