The Browns had Mayfield for 4 years. Making a change going into year 5 was entirely reasonable. Both Mayfield and the Browns handled the situation poorly. Mayfield effectively engineered a move to the Panthers. He doesn't get a pass for the mess.
How did either handle it poorly? Browns, like many teams, wanted to go after a premier QB in the prime of his career. Was no secret and Baker knew about it. Baker was going into a contract year so wanted to start somewhere.

I think the Browns may have been better off sticking with Mayfield than trading away a ton for Deshaun.
Maybe.....but Watson was playing pretty well before his injury. Just unfortunate he got hurt (as he's been pretty healthy since his rookie season).

May feel differently IF next season goes like this one but I would not undo the deal at this point.

I just think the Browns gave up way too much for Watson when he isn’t that much better than Mayfield IMO.

If he is better.

This past season by Mayfield was better than any season Watson has had since being acquired by the Browns.

Pretty sure Mayfield would not have received a fully guaranteed deal by now from the Browns.

If he isn't that much better than Baker we gave up too much. Though guessing most think he's a lot better.

I mean, at time of deal there were a dozen teams that all seemed willing to meet Houston's asking price just to meet with him (though Watson refused to meet with some.....and best we could get from Baker was a 5th rounder only if we paid some of his salary.

But good for him for a bounce back season.

OK...but might have to do with a long suspension and major injury. If he gets hurt again, sure, that's an issue.....but until this season had been very healthy since his rookie season.

This.
If an injury counts as bad news then I agree.....but way he was playing before he was said to be hurt I doubt many Browns were unhappy with how he had been playing.

I'm always unhappy with DW. Tough to root for someone with issues like that. But I gotta tolerate him because I'll always be a Browns fan.

Yeah if one doesn't like him I guess doesn't matter how he plays for that person.

I'd be willing to bet there are players on our team who have done worse than what we know he did.

What I think really fucked up the browns. Was their chemistry.
They were finally a playoff team, headed in the right direction.
Had a leader, defense was coming around, might even been the favorite to win the division if not for a coach named Harbaugh.
Then they thought. I got a bright idea. Lets blow all this shit out of the water & outsmart ourselves. Then another FO guy said. Lets do one better. Lets throw all our money in a dumpster fire so we can be warm when we all lose our jobs & are homeless. (dont know if any of them lost their jobs though) To make sure we are homeless. Lets give away the farm.
Hell it feels like Baker did more for the rams than Watson for the Browns.
Hell. Baker has already played more games for the Bucs than Watson has for the Browns since the trade.

In Watsons 12 games played. He is under 60% cmp pct. 14Tds to 9 INTs for just over 2200yds.

Browns fans dont need to be told this, but Browns front office is getting what the deserve.
Try & get to cute & shit is bound to happen.
Falcons BTW should be saying thank you for dodging a bullet. That is where I think he was headed when the Browns popped up in the 11th hour.

Feel bad for Brown fans, but happy as shit Watson is sucking. (when he ever suits up)

all that....had the most injuries of nearly every team in the league, including needing to play 4 QBs in games that matter....play in the toughest division and the tougher conference....yet somehow went 11-6 still?

Yeah. It really sucks. Too bad we aren't Atlanta.

Ya gotta love this forum.

I'm not sure what you thought I said.
I am talking about Watson & how it set you guys back.
his 1st year here the Browns went from contenders to 7-10

This year I am on record of saying your coach should have been COTY.
Watson is still sucking (when he plays) & still sucking all the resources away from the team to pay him to sit on his couch.
The trade still hurts this team, whether you want to see it or not.

I saw what you said I just wonder if you put any real thought into it. Pretty sure any team getting Watson knew a long suspension was coming in 2022 so kind of wrote that off. His injury did suck but we also managed to go 4-1 in the games he played and he played really well in 3 of those games. Not great in 4th but better than Burrow. In terrible weather. was awful in the steeler game. Sucking is a major stretch and simply shows you cannot think straight on this topic. Maybe regroup and try again?

Oh, the injury was unfortunate but no more than any team who loses their QB for a long stretch.....no reason to think he cannot come back next year where he left off and if he does we are in good shape with the roster I would think (hard to know anything pre FA).

I'm convinced that's all he's worth in the current market.

I don't see a big difference between Wilson and Mayfield. If Wilson is worth $20M per season then he's worth trading for. If he's not worth $20M to another team then the Broncos will cut him. If he's not worth $20M then how is Mayfield worth $40M? On the flip side of the coin if Mayfield is worth $40M then how is Wilson not worth $30M, and why would the Broncos be talking about cutting him? I figure most of the player stories are down to agents trying to inflate interest in their clients. We'll see what happens, but ultimately market analysis won't mean a thing. If a GM is prepared to overpay for someone then that move temporarily sets the market, but there's a limited supply of GMs willing to make high-risk, low-reward moves. Cousins > Garoppolo > Smith > Mayfield > Wilson.

3 years 100 million

50 guaranteed

So like I said......
