3.5 games out of the 2nd wildcard with 2 teams ahead of us in our div, and 5 games out of the division. fucking weird.

what i wouldn't give for us to be in the central instead lol.

and now the deadline has passed. going to look around and see what's happened in the rest of mlb today.

I give the Sewald deal a C-

If Josh Rojas can play second competently and hit like he did from 2021-2022, we landed a league average second baseman. If he continues hitting like he is right now (no reason to expect anything else), we landed an older Abraham Torro.

The other two are 45 grade prospects who have killed it statistically in the minors but for whatever reason, scouts don't seem to like.

Past Trades Jerry tride to sell us on.

You know what's funny is that I really liked Jake Fraley a lot. Not trying to brag and say I was right, but here are Fraley's numbers over his last 158 games played:

.264/.347/.472 with 23 doubles, 27 HRs, 91 RBIs and 23 steals.

If he was on the Mariners roster right now he'd arguably be the biggest threat in our lineup. The Mariners have a serious flaw in whatever the hell they are doing when it comes to scouting, coaching and developing hitters.

I don't get the move. We acquired two utility guys for our closer. Like him or hate him, he was our best BP guy this year. So to deal that for Moore and Haggerty makes no sense other than Dipoto is our guy.

I would say developing. He was well liked in Tampa and he is hitting in Cincinnati so we targeted the right guy but never developed him. I mean there are so many shit show bats that come here but are suppose to be MLB average at least. We have a problem...or two.

I agree. Also with how fucking cheap the Mariners are, you'd think they'd love the fact that he's not a free agent for a while.

If you're going to deal from a position of organizational strength (pitching), at least try to get something other than AAAA players. The only thing that is saving me from being infuriated about this trade is that apparently D'Backs fans hated it and really like Dominic Canzone. Hopefully they're right.

The Mariners have a very clear problem.

Most position players seem to regress here, and seem to hit better when they leave.

What is the solution? I don't know. Sadly I don't think Dipoto or Servais are going anywhere anytime soon, so I'm just going to bypass that argument. But if we have to operate under the constraints of their "leadership," something needs to be done about our approach to drafting, developing, acquiring and coaching hitters.

i'm a long way from using the word "like" for it after reading the bleacher report notes on it. sewald in the top 15% for whiff rate top 2% for hard hit rate. the two we got are no 19 and 29 in arizona's minor league system, and i guarantee idiot diputzo was enamored with their ops numbers without considering that they're from 2 of the most hitter friendly ballparks in the minor league. odds of them being dogshit are pretty high.

they get sewald through 2024 too. if it were just a loaner for this season, i'd attach the word "like" to it. but i can't go that far right now. i don't care if it's the best offer diputzo could find.
Alright I’d like to retract and say my opinion of this trade has gone down with no follow up moves. Very frustrating.

you all are so good.

a couple of things weird me out, too, and i know i'm just reiterating what people already said. getting rid of sewald and not replacing him with anything substantive that can be of help this year means our org doesn't care about trying to win this year, and what the hell do those acquisitions do for us next year and beyond?

and second, it seems the main goal of the trade deadline shuffle was to drop what, $8 mill in salary next year? this team is a LOT more than $8 mill in offseason acquisitions away from being competitive for the west. something about the way this played out leads me to believe the tightass moron owners aren't going to give him much more than that to play with, either. so where the fuck are we?
