Looks like the annual "Seahawks fans vainly waiting for the Seahawks to make a splash in FA" era is upon us.
Yeah, the prevailing reaction to nearly every signing early in free agency is that it's an over-spend, but then we still get upset at our FO for not making any big moves.

Swiping Jones from Denver seems like a great add.

good player not great but he adds great versatility. He is young and will/should improve Under the Hawks New Pass rush specialist. Going to be good having that versatility on the DL. 100% Helps the depth and rotation and has no issues starting. Now plug in a stud or 2 from the draft on the DLine and we got something good going.

What's not to love about this signing from a player acquisition perspective? He should be a significant upgrade on the DL whether we stay with the 3-4 or switch something closer to a 4-3, which I doubt we do.

A priority in the draft is going to be getting a stud NT. Not sure that Carter fits that role. He might be better as a DE in a 3-4. But you don't need to spend high draft capital to get a NT usually.

No complaints about the off-season in total so far. Looks like they got the Geno deal about right. Agreed to terms with a talented and young DT. Cut a couple over-priced older players. No major FA losses. If they add a starting quality LB, I think it's at least a solid B+ for a pre-draft off-season grade from me.

Lately I find myself oscillating on what I want to see happen at 1.5, especially with the news about the DT signing. I still think the best move would be Carter if he's there, but maybe with adding Jones it's starting to make more sense to go with Wilson or Will Anderson? At least 2 of those 3 should be there, hoping for all 3 because then that probably means all 4 picks ahead of us were QBs.

I'm pretty fine with them taking anyone of Anderson, Carter, Wilson at 5. The only player I would be actively upset about would be Richardson.

I was hoping to get a QB that we can build around I am not completely sold on Geno Smith but after the Panthers trade I dont think there will be someone of value by the time we pick. As for the free agent signing I think it is an awesome move. Shelby was a nice guy and I liked the enthusiasm from him when we beat the Broncos week 1 but cutting him and signing a young 26 year old was a good move. I can tell Pete and John are moving in a direction to stack up the defense this draft. I would expect by the end of the draft we are atleast walking away with 2 DL and 2 LBers.

carter and jones would be an absolutely sick combo and it would make the job of our edge rushers so much easier

Carter and either Van Ness or Murphy would turn our entire DL around.

The bulk of his cap hit is in the final year. What I do like about this contract is it's $30M guaranteed, but $20M of that was at signing (so gets pro-rated) and another $3M is materialized this year... basically you can cut him after next season for a small dead cap. The rest of his guaranteed is only if he's on the roster after the waiving period - so basically all his guaranteed is really the signing bonus.

Jones is not as good as Hargrave but he came cheaper and Seattle can move on if needed after 2 years (Hargrave the 9ers are stuck with for at least 3). That said, Hargrave is also 4 years older and just turned 30, so the 9ers might be paying for past production. Jones just turned 26 so he still has upside and can improve and he's obviously going to play hard to try and secure a major extension by 2025 (when he's 28).

I've seen some mocks having us take Carter and Murphy. That would be insane, along with Jones. We'd still need a massive run stuffer and have to figure out center/ILB, but other than that in theory the line should be pretty damn good assuming Carter actually gives an F about football. Murphy seems like a more well rounded player against the run compared to Jones (although Jones is young enough he can still improve0.

Jefferson has now been cut...

Makes sense, zero reason to keep him because Jones is younger and basically is the replacement for Jefferson. Jefferson was an even bigger liability in run support and historically had a pretty high missed tackle ratio. Jones played a higher amount of snap counts than Jefferson as well and is 4 years younger. Lot more room for upside there.

Here is what Spotrac shows for Cody Barton

Kinda shows you how bad he was for us last year... No one wanted to offer him more than a 1 years contract, which leads me to believe that the Seahawks didn't even make him an offer...

To use a baseball analogy, I guess Cody Barton ended up being a 4A player in the NFL. He was excellent on ST and had strong outings as a backup, but he proved to be a liability as a starter. And it's a bummer because he's easily a very likable guy. Will be interesting to see how things go for him in DC behind a top quality DL.

This is a really good signing for Washington. Barton should perform better in the 4-3 that Washington runs, while having experience at all three LB positions. He's a versitile player for a team that had only 1 LB start in even half their games last year. It's a solid depth signing with a player who's got lots of experience on the field, and didn't cost them much.

As far as Seattle offering, it's also possible that Barton wanted to go to a 4-3 team and not a 3-4 team. Can't say for sure, since Seattle has been cutting their defense players pretty heavily as well. Could just be as likely Seattle is trying to get more traditional 3-4 talent.
