R.I.P. Bill Russell.
One of the original NBA legends....and later an all around good guy and speaker.
Saw him & the Celtics play the Knicks in MSG a few times in the late 60's but mostly saw him play on TV.
When we lived in Queens my parents took us kids to the World's Fair in 1965.
My dad brought me (10 yrs old) and my younger brother to the sports pavilion there to meet various pro athletes who were there signing autographs. I got Bill Russell's and shook his hand. He was the tallest man I'd ever seen up close back then. Also met and got the autographs of Johnny Unitas, Sugar Ray Robinson & Roger Maris that same weekend.
Still have them to this day.
