We mentioned this in the other thread...do the patches after he dies, but couldn't they have retired his number while he was alive? Maybe during the 75th year stuff, to celebrate the winningest dude in history?

Number 6 is already in Philly‘s rafters. They better not hang a banner for a Celtic in Philly.

Get over it man.

This is like Jackie Robinson for baseball. Russell’s legacy and importance transcends the jersey he wore and he should be celebrated by the league.

He has no business being in the GOAT debate, but he might be the most historically important NBA player of all time.

Hanging his jersey number in every arena insures that his contributions won’t be forgotten.

Already have a number 6 who earned his jersey retirement in Philly. Number 6 in Philly will always be Dr J.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of retiring a number for an entire league. This thing with the same number already being retired in Philly to honor Dr. J is part of the reason.

It just shits on his well earned accolades and it’s just virtue signaling nonsense anyway.

Also, why just his number. Because he's known as the "greatest winner". Why not re-name the championship trophy after him. I'd wager that more people know who Russell is than Larry O' Brien.

Why not also retire Magic's #32 and Birds #33?...without them, there may not be an NBA.

Why not retire MJ's number?...he's pretty much widely considered the GOAT and he took the game global.

Yep. It’s just dumb. I get the Jackie Robinson stuff because he broke the color barrier in sports. Russell didn’t break the color barrier in basketball.

He did actually.

He was the first black coach in the NBA, and I am pretty sure that also made him the first black coach in any major professional sport.

I know this because I grew up about 30 minutes from the HOF. Been there countless times.

Fritz Pollard was the first black coach, 1921 Akron Pros. He also played for them while the coach.

1921?

Innagural NBA season was 1949.

Akron Pros is not an NBA team.
