We mentioned this in the other thread...do the patches after he dies, but couldn't they have retired his number while he was alive? Maybe during the 75th year stuff, to celebrate the winningest dude in history?

This is like Jackie Robinson for baseball. Russell’s legacy and importance transcends the jersey he wore and he should be celebrated by the league.

He has no business being in the GOAT debate, but he might be the most historically important NBA player of all time.

Hanging his jersey number in every arena insures that his contributions won’t be forgotten.

He was the first black coach in the NBA, and I am pretty sure that also made him the first black coach in any major professional sport.

I know this because I grew up about 30 minutes from the HOF. Been there countless times.

Fritz Pollard was the first black coach, 1921 Akron Pros. He also played for them while the coach.
