Reports are that DET is close to signing Baez. We may have inadvertently wrecked Correa's market.

I wouldn't mind Kershaw, Suzuki and Gomes
not sure about Gomes think i would rather go with Huff and Heim. and instead go for Iglesius and/or Jansen for relief pitchers/closers and Kershaw and Suzuki

of course Iglesius and Jansen would add 22M so with Kershaw at 20M and Suzuki around 11M

I was discussing the possibility of converting Josh Smith to a centerfielder with another fan on Twitter. He brought up the possibility of him becoming another Chris Taylor who also started out as a SS. He also mentioned how Taylor had the influence of Tim Hyers and that Josh Smith would too.

CF Josh Smith
LF Ezequiel Duran
DH Justin Foscue

This guy sure has a thing for Gallo. I don't want to see him and his 200 average ever in a Rangers uniform again.
He's probably hoping Gallo will be like Cruz, a late bloomer...

I get that, and hey I hope Joey has a solid career.

But I don't want the future of this franchise to hang on the hopes that Joey will have a solid career.

I would be extremely surprised if he ever plays for the Rangers again that would be mind boggling. If they thought he would eventually become the face of the team they wouldn't have traded him...

But you must admit that seeing those big bats of Seager, Semien, Gallo and Garcia all together in the same lineup could be a lot of fun :D

My theory of Correa signing first to set the tone for everyone else sure was deadass wrong.

I think it hangs on the hopes of Seager and Semien having solid careers now. That would be the case even if Joey came back.

Hey, at least you weren't afraid to put forth a theory. Other than days like the last couple of days, that putting forth of theories, right or wrong, is what makes this board what it is.

Will a team give Correa 11 years for $400 million?

Well, I mean technically it hangs on the bulk of the lineup having solid careers, whoever is a part of it.

What I meant was that a lot of people like Jared romanticize Gallo as some sort of mythological being that should be here no matter what, or that he's some sort of crucial ingredient that is needed for the Rangers to succeed. Or that he should be here when they do because he's "paid his dues" or some such.

He's not the piece you start with, in a proverbial "putting a team together" sense. I think a lot of Rangers fans feel that way about him, though.

Will a team give Correa 11 years for $400 million?

Was thinking about that this morning.

Correa already had a very limited market. There were only a handful of teams that have a need enough to shell out the contract he'd be getting, and most of those teams were in on all the options. The Rangers put theirs on the table and took two off the board. DET - Correa's most likely destination - took another. With Story still available, the few remaining teams have a cheaper option to consider. Correa's market has taken a big hit, and he's not in a position to demand like he was at the outset.

I personally don't think he gets 11/400. I don't think he beats Lindor as has been stated is his goal. In fact, I'd be willing to bet he could struggle to pass Seager's deal. A team isn't going to pay him more just so he can have the satisfaction.

From Jeff Wilson:

The Rangers added $561.2 million to future payrolls, and did it without it hurting all that much. They had only $26 million or so committed for 2022, plus around another $23 million in pre-arbs and abritration-eligibles.

There’s more to spend if they want it.

Now, though, the dominoes start to fall, and it’s not good news for everyone on the 40-man roster.

The Rangers have one opening and have added four players. So, three are going to have to go. That’s the business of baseball.

What comes of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Solak and Andy Ibanez, middle infielders who at some point in the past few seasons were thought to be future pieces? Their future might be elsewhere, though Isiah Kiner-Falefa would be a handy utility player.

The Rangers now appear to have also blocked some of their top prospects. Justin Foscue, Ezequiel Duran, Josh Smith and Davis Wendzel are middle infielders. So are Corey Seager (10 years, $325 million) and Marcus Semien (seven years, $175 million).

The prospects might be required to switch positions. They might become trade bait, which could become an advantage for the Rangers. At minimum they’re minor-leaguers still trying to develop, another advantage for the Rangers.

The Seager and Semien signings, though, hurt the farm system some because the Rangers will be required to forfeit their second- and third-round draft picks (third in each round) while also losing money from their international bonus pool.

But the Rangers are better. They have given themselves visibility with other free agents, this offseason and in future offseasons. They have given fans a reason to come to Globe Life Field other than just to experience air-conditioned summertime baseball.

It’s a stunning changing from past offseasons. Enjoy it.
