Why do we insist on blaming the QB when the defense gives up 21 points in 8 minutes? Just stop. The Niners D cost them the game. They played great for 3.5 quarters and shitty for 8 minutes. That was enough

21 point in 8 mins is a lot, but it's not something the KC OFC had not done during the season.

I'm putting it more on Shanny than Jimmy G.

When there was opportunity to widen the lead (twice) in the 4th Qtr...the SF OFC ran 6 plays and punted with a 2 possession lead, and the ran 3 plays and punted with a 3 point lead.

I just dont get why anyone has to "be to blame". Jimmy played well. SF led late. KC won. It was a good game where the Chiefs offense proved to be better than the Niners D when it mattered most. Thats pretty much what most of us expected isnt it?

The true blame goes to the Bengals. The Niners got so lucky in the 2 Super Bowls against the Bengals that they are now cursed in any close Super Bowl game.

I pretty much agree. However, not going for points at the end of the 1st half and not running on 2nd and 5 with a lead late in the game should haunt Shanahan until he gets the monkey off his back.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Its just exacerbated in the SB. Ultimately the best unit on the Niners had the game in their hands in the 4Q and they didnt get it done . As a SF fan youd take a 10 pt lead with 10 minutes left every time because youd expect your D to hold it. They didnt. Thats why they lost

I agree. However, when the game was on the line, JG played poorly. When you're up by 10 with that defense and the coach calls on you to make some plays to put a dagger in the opponent, you need to come through.

I totally agree. He messed up. Now he's blown leads in 2 Super Bowls.

Shanahan......they should have been running the ball more with a 10 point lead and around 7 minutes left in the game.

I think the default response is to lay the blame on is Shanahan, but JG looked like shit when it counted. The coach calls the plays and the players have to execute. Shanahan put his trust in JG to go out there and win the game.

I think the real reason for the loss was the Chiefs were just the better team. They deserved to win. Pat Mahomes is the truth. Game on the line and he clutched in a big way.

However, for the sake of argument, I am interested to see what the collective thinks.
Jimmy G is like a statue in the pocket. He can't create plays with his legs.

SF threw the ball 31 times and ran the ball just 22 times for 141 yards.

Both Shanahan and Garapallo were to blame.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I think too. We all knew going in what the Niners had to do and that was keep Mahomes and that offense on the sideline, especially late when they had the momentum swing. The defense looked pretty gassed with about 6 minutes left to me. As a coach, I rely on my bread and butter running game to seal the deal. I don't care about boring at that point but the simple fact is they only scored 20 points and you won't win many games let alone SBs with that. Last year being the anomoly, of course. Not really gonna blame it on any one thing but it all goes hand in hand. The Chiefs having 4 or 5? possessions in one quarter is playing with fire, imo. Even good defenses can't hold up.

Sure and if Mahomes doesnt suck for 3Qs the Chiefs are probably already up 2 TDs anyway.

That is a bad ratio for a run heavy team with an average at best QB but in fairness, probably 3/4 of those pass attempts were play action checkdowns, etc and yac so essentially glorified run plays.

He didn't even play that poorly. Every QB is going to have periods where they miss some throws. First drive of the 4th, he missed one throw, and they punted. Next drive, he missed two throws he shouldn't even have been attempting. Not great, but it's hard to fault a guy for two plays. The worst was the (final) drive when he missed three straight throws. That's not good, sure, but he shouldn't even have been in that position to start with. He did make some plays right before that to get them to midfield.

In order I chalk this one up to:
Mahomes
SF Defense
Shanahan
Jimmy G

No potato salad option, therefore the poll is invalid.

Also, the Niners Def should get the most of the blame.
Not at all, they were great, that last TD didn't matter, they held KC to 24 points that counted which was all they could be expected to. They couldn't score enough to win.

Also the D got kind of tired at the end, which is typical. Defenses are stronger in first halves
