Wasn’t there a Bengals player years ago who cheapshotted a player in the back of the head and got off because football is a violent sport, essentially; assumption of risk?

I can't recall.

To me a cheapshot in football is a football play, diving at someone's knees, head hunting, etc.

Maybe that did happen to the Bengals player, but this was something else altogether. I don't think the league will be looking at this in the same vein as a football cheap shot. This was assault on a football field.

It will be interesting on whose side the Union will fall if Garrett appeals.

Here’s my take..

Rudolph was obviously frustrated after INT #3. Myles took him down to the ground and Rudolph fought back (I think he kicked him in the nuts). Who knows what was said... what Garrett did was defintely wrong but I think Rudolph should get 1 game. Pouncey 2 games. Has Garrett ever been in trouble with a fine or suspended? If not, he may get off with 4-6 games.

Oh no he isn't good either. If you thought Rudolph couldn't throw the ball down field neither can Hodges.
The issue is with a horrible play calling O Coordinator, no WR's, backup RB's and a poor performing O-Line the better fit is a QB who can leave the pocket on occasion and still make a play.

Mason stunk it up severely, but he laid that one out there perfectly in the endzone and Holton dropped it.

By the way, does anyone think that Tomlin bears at least a little responsibility in any of this? I mean they were down 2 TD's with under a minute to play and no timeouts, and they were around their own 10 or 15 yard line, and he's still trying to have Rudolph drop back and air it out? That seemed silly to me last night even before the melee broke out. I kept saying why don't they just take the knee and end this boring game? And as a result of Tomlin deciding to keep going for it he ended up getting Rudolph sacked (hard) twice on back to back plays, and nearly a third time when Garrett hit him late. If Tomlin just takes a knee on any of those last 3 snaps none of the fighting would ever have happened. So does anyone agree with me that Tomlin should have just conceded the game, took the knees and went to the dressing room?
So you're suggesting that a head coach should send the message to his team that instead of fighting till the end let's just give up when it doesn't look like its going our way.

Frank Reicht would like to have a word with you.

If a fan in the stands had done that to another person, they probably would be facing criminal charges and be banned for life from the stadium.

Wonder how many fights were in the parking lot after the game between Browns and Steelers fans? Those Cleveland fans can catch fire pretty quick. I was at a game there this year.

Football is a business. It's not a Disney movie. The game was clearly over. Even without what happened, why risk your only decent QB getting injured at the off chance you might pull of a miracle and only lose by 7?

I get that, and that might even explain why Pittsburgh decided to try to air it out on the first two plays that Rudolph got sacked, but with only 14 seconds left, it was 3rd and 29, and Pitts was on their own 17 yard line with no timeout's left. The game was over even to the most optimistic of Steeler fans. That's why that final play should have just been a kneel down in my opinion.
As long as point differential is a tie breaker (albeit down the list) teams will try to score.

Not even a little? He clearly knew the game was lost at that point so whey keep risking your QB and why keep trying to air it out? He had to know that was going to rev up the Cleveland defense. That doesn't excuse the Cleveland defense either, I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying that Tomlin's choice to keep playing instead of just kneeling definitely had some ripple effects.

What is so wrong about giving a struggling QB more reps? This isn't the last game of the season, and the Steelers offense needs all the help it can get.

The entire offense has been just bad this season.

OL forgot they were the best line in the league last year. Mason is trash. The WR's can get open but have terminal dropitis. TE's aren't blocking well, which is why Banner is playing so much. And RB's are crippled.

If there was a chance to still pull off a miracle I definitely don't fault a coach for trying to win. Hell, the Seahawks seem to to do it every week just to test my heart. But last night (with 14 seconds left and down 2 TD's) would have needed a miracle on top of a miracle with an added assist from God himself (herself?) to pull it off.

No way Garrett should play another game this season....it doesn't matter if he's never had a prior offense along these lines...he used a man's helmet as a weapon. Essentially an assault on a football field. He cannot play again this season.

Rudolph basically was trying to get the man off him...I don't think he intently kicked him in the balls...(Pouncey was intently kicking and throwing blows) I'm not sure how the league will look at that. I can see the QB getting a zero games, maybe a fine, and I can see him getting a game.

If Rudolph started the fight, suspend them both for 2 games. If not, Garret for the season.
You are full on Oscar level stupid. Not to mention the going through all my posts to give face palms. Pathetic.

He needs some discipline.

He should be forced to play for the Patriots for the rest of the season. I know, I know - this won't be easy, but it's for his own good.

Maybe because of my hockey watching past I'm just more used to coaches pulling their goalie when they start getting embarrassed. Give the goalie a break, let him regroup for the next game. No need to leave a player in when they are struggling. That's kind of a hockey thing. Rudolph had been getting embarrassed all game. Giving him 2 or 3 more reps doesn't seem (to me) like it was going to be very beneficial for him. And if he'd blown out his Achilles or something then the coach would look extra foolish for leaving him in. I'm just saying that if I was the coach in that situation I'd probably have done it differently. No shame in conceding a game with seconds left that you know you've lost in my opinion. Live to fight another day.

The Steelers will need to look into a RB and a TE for sure. I'd much rather have a Frank Gore vet than 4 guys on rookie deals and none can stay on the field.

OL...they just had a terrible game along with Rudolph and Fitch....but when you have a young QB out there, as a position player on OFC, you can't be the guy to make the mistake and we saw that.
