I think you are right, its a negotiation talk. Also, LeBron gets money from endorsements and I think he has side businesses. He's already rich, can get money in endorsements, and you are right, rings are what matter to him.

He's now on a 4 seed team in the EC, played 3000 minutes, went 7 games in round 1, and basically had to carry the team by himself.

I think his ego would prevent him from taking less than the max. It would be up to CP to sacrifice even more.
